Takapuna Grammar is a leader in Performing Arts education. We are committed to offering a broad programme of curricular and co-curricular opportunities in Music, Dance, Drama, and Musical Theatre, and we work hard to foster an environment where students are supported to achieve at the highest levels.

Our focus on educational excellence in the Performing Arts starts with the youngest members of our faculty - students entering Year 9 who have a particular talent and interest in the areas of Dance and Music are encouraged to register for our extension programmes. These programmes are designed to expand student learning beyond the standard Year 9 rotation classes, setting the framework for success for continued study in Years 10 through 13.

Our students consistently achieve scholarship results in their NCEA and IB studies, and many of our former students are now employed across a wide range of roles within the  Performing Arts sector in New Zealand and abroad - a testament to the quality of their educational foundation at our school.

We excel in the co-curricular space too. In 2023, TGS was the only single school in the country to have two choirs selected to perform at the Finale of the annual Big Sing Festival - New Zealand’s top schools choir competition. Both choirs performed beautifully throughout the festival with great success - Leonessa, our premiere higher voices choir, was awarded Gold while TGS Chorale, our premiere mixed voices choir, was awarded Silver. Our instrumental musicians shine at events such as the KBB Festival, and our Rock Bands are frequent award winners at the Smokefree RockQuest. Our dancers are among the top competitive school teams in New Zealand, and they consistently achieve outstanding results both at the regional and national level.

TGS Drama and Musical Theatre students embrace the opportunity to showcase their talents in our annual Shakespeare production, as well as in our major school productions that happen every second year. Our 2022 production, Mama Mia, was a hit - not only did the sold-out audiences love it, the team at the Auckland Live Showdown Awards did too! Our cast and crew were honoured to receive several accolades including; Best Sound Design, the CCMT Award for Best Female in a Leading Role (Musical), Best Choreographer, as well as Best Production. We look forward to repeating this success in 2024.
