Let's take a look at the five groups of hominids and when each group lived: Australopithecus, Homo habilis, Homo erectus, Neanderthals, and Homo sapiens. 

Using the map (click to open a larger version), we will discuss the following:

1. Where did early humans migrate to/from?

2. Which direction did humans have to travel to get from Asia to North America?

3. Which continent did humans travel to last?

You will be assigned a reading passage about one specific hominid. As you read, you will be looking for key characteristics and achievements about this hominid. Write down these key details in the ”Achievements + Characteristics” section at the bottom of the page.

After you have read your individual passage and listed out key details, you will join up with a small group of students who read about different hominids. 

In your group, each person will take turns teaching other group members about the hominid from their specific reading. During this time, each group member will complete the chart on the back of their reading passage. Make sure you listen closely to each group member and write down notes about their hominid.
