Build Your Own Mohenjo Daro Handout (given in class)
Mohenjo-Daro was basically the Harappan Civilization’s superstar city—complete with straight streets, brick houses, and a fancy public bath that was probably the ancient version of a spa day. The people were so organized, even their drains had drains. Then, like a dramatic season finale, the city was abandoned, leaving behind mysterious ruins, cool artifacts, and a name that literally means “Mound of the Dead.”
You will be participating in a game-based simulation to learn about about Mohenjo-Daro, the Indus Valley Civilization, and their developments in urban planning. You will start the game with 20 points and you will gain or lose points based upon your decisions in each round. Your goal is to earn the most points during the simulation.
This game does not work if you work ahead. There are new twists during each round, so you must follow your teacher’s directions closely.
While this is a game and it will get competitive, we still must be respectful and follow all of our normal class procedures.
Reflect on your experience playing the simulation by answering the following questions on the Mohenjo-Daro Simulation Journal/Reflection handout.
What do our cities and homes today have in common with the buildings in the city of Mohenjo-Daro?
In your opinion, what are the biggest priorities for urban planners to keep in mind when designing a city?
