Comparing Daily Life Writing Prompt (posted in Classroom)
You will have 10 minutes to rotate around the room and write whatever comes to mind about how the things are now: clothing, military, entertainment, writing, farming, societal standards, animals, art, laws, medicine, architecture, and religion.
What If You Lived in Ancient Egypt?
What kind of food would you eat?
How were women treated?
Did slaves build the pyramids?
Pharaoh Ramesses II and Queen Nefertari swap lives with some stinky peasants. She sleeps in gazelle poop, he eats locusts, and the peasants discover stone pillows and royal toilets. Nefertari gets lice, the Pharaoh orders another giant statue of himself, and everyone agrees: ancient reality TV is wild.
Life in Ancient Egypt wasn’t all pyramids and pharaohs. Most people were busy farming along the Nile, making bread that was basically ancient toast, and trying not to get sunburned while building stuff that would last for thousands of years.
Kids played with homemade toys, adults worked hard (unless they were royalty, in which case they mostly pointed at things and said, “Build that”), and everyone believed the afterlife was basically a fancy upgrade.
So let's dive into a day in the life of an ancient Egyptian — just be careful not to annoy the gods. They were kind of dramatic.
You will learn more about daily life by visiting at least 8 of the 12 topics and reading the informational posters. After reading each informational poster, fill out the Life of an Egyptian Gallery Walk handout. You will need to write 2-3 details from the posters and 1-2 comparisons to TODAY for 8 of the 12 categories.
Using the information collected in this activity, write a complete, evidence-based response to the following prompt. Include similarities & differences. Provide examples from placards and images. This will count as a quiz grade!
