On Sunday 28-April, over 40 TES athletes, from both campuses, represented our school at Challenge Taiwan 2019 in Taitung, arguably, the biggest triathlon event in the Taiwanese sporting calendar, with nearly 700 junior competitors aged up to 15. This was the inaugural outing of the TES Titans Triathlon Team (or "Team T3"). Over the past 6 months, students have trained to develop their swimming, cycling, transition and running skills in the lead up to this fantastic event.

14 students from ESC participated in the race, which required athletes to swim 350m across the open water of Taitung Flowing Lake, followed by a 5km bike ride and 2km run. They joined forces with over 20 triathletes from EPC to present a formidable combined force at the event. In spite of the initial fears of many parents regarding the difficulty of the course - particularly the swim - all our athletes proved that they were up to challenge, completing the race in style!

Top performances on the [stiflingly hot and humid] day came from Vinzent Schuett, who placed 18th out of 126 in his age group, completing the course in 34:05 mins. Not far behind was Georgia Stokes-Green, who crossed the line in 35:50 mins, placing 8th out of 99 in her age group. Other noteworthy performances came from Mia Yang and Jocelyn Chan, who both placed in the top 20 of the 11yr old girls' category, and Stefano Villa and Oscar Fret who finished in the top 40 of the boys' group.

Inspired by their great performances, and having thoroughly enjoyed the weekend, those that participated are eager to compete again, so why not join them at Chinese Taipei Triathlon Association's National Championships on September 7th!? Training sessions, which are open to adults and children, are held once a month at Zhoumei Sports Park, next to Beitou Incinerator. All are welcome to join for TES family fitness fun! For more information, visit the T3 team website and the Link to T3 Video on Youtube from Sunday's Triathlon.

Well done to all the students who participated in season 3. Hugh thank you to the coaches for the effort and time you put in!!

My first ever TISSA Sports competition...

Hello, my name is Duncan and I am the TISSA Badminton champion for both singles and doubles. Even though it was my first TISSA tournament, I was composed due to my 4 years of training and previous competitions.

Firstly, I would just like to say how amazing of an experience it is to be participating in a large scale tournament such as TISSA. I have been to different tournaments before, and this one doesn’t disappoint. Through this process, I have developed a close friendship with my doubles partner: Dhruv. Furthermore, I was able to improve my badminton skills and strategy.

Winning required effort. I have to admit, my opponent in the finals was strong, and more to my disadvantage: he was almost two heads taller than me. In the finals, it was neck-to-neck, it was 1-1. Every point counted. Badminton isn’t just a physical game, it was a mind game as well. One cannot lose their cool as they would ultimately lose. I was anxious, but I persevered through the match. Every point was a cheer from my friends and supporters, every point was an increase in my confidence. The scores was 14-10, I looked my opponent in the eye, my mind was in a state of victory: we both knew it was over. When I won the match point and the scoreboard was 15-10, I let out a triumphant yell and punched the air.

Succeeding is no easy process, to get to this point I had to go through many hardships. I have dedicated many hours to training, to become a badminton player, so many hours that I eventually developed a passion. I have sacrificed my time, sweat and sometimes even tears when I no longer had the urge to continue. But the key being a good athlete and overall a successful person is to be resilient, to persevere, and to never give up.

'We have been in the same team together for three years now, and every year we start the season with little expectations other than to spend time playing a sport that we all enjoy. If you had asked us a week earlier, none of us would have ever expected to win second place at the tournament this year. And even though we all view it as a major accomplishment, we also feel like we have gained a lot more from this season than just a medal.

Teamwork is something that we have learned to appreciate, and how working with other people can also benefit ourselves. This was especially obvious to us during our matches, because without the strong teamwork and chemistry that we shared, it is hard to believe we would have ever been able to get second place. This is also the first year that we have been in the same team as people outside of our own year groups. Despite not having really ever talked to them before this season, having the chance to spend time getting to know them and being in the same team together, is also part of what made this season so enjoyable for us.

Perseverance is something else that we have developed throughout this season, and it was especially important when we were playing against a team that we were losing to: our final match against MAT was both challenging and frustrating, but even so, we persevered throughout the whole game and never gave up. And even though losing to them was disappointing, even more so because it was such a close game, knowing that we had tried our best was enough for us.

All in all, we are happy that our last JV Basketball season was such a good one, and grateful that we were able to make some of our most enjoyable and unforgettable memories through it. Hopefully our next season will be just as good!

Softball match reports

U15 FOBISIA official movie 2018/19!! Go TITANS!

On Wednesday 28th of November, we hosted the annual Daniel Chung Remembrance Match against DIS, Daniel’s former school.

It was a great match that was played with a spirit of competitiveness and fairness . Both teams played well and honoured their former teammate through the sport that he loved so much. Each year, The TES Titans play against a DIS combined Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball Team to mark our shared remembrance of Daniel.

Though our hearts carried sadness commemorating the loss of our friend this time last year, this game was the perfect way to remember Daniel at TES and the legacy he left behind. We’d like to express gratitude once more to Daniel’s mum and family, as well as the large crowd of his friends, classmates and teachers for attending the match and coming together to celebrate an unforgettable friend who was a shining light in not only our year group, but in the school community. Daniel left an irreplaceable mark in all of our lives and we hope that you will continue to remember and celebrate this wonderful young man with us forever.
