Written by Kwok ChowIt was an honour and a privilege to have Mike Gatting OBE (Former player and Captain of the National England Cricket Team) visit Taipei and TES.
He was invited to visit the European Secondary campus to address British Secondary and High School students on Monday 9th of December. For me it was fantastic to see Mr Gatting introduce new skills and drills to our students in the sport of cricket. Mr Gatting spoke to the students in the Phase 2 atrium space and delivered a speech about the value of grit and perseverance. He drew upon his experiences throughout his playing career around the globe as both an international player and captain of his country.

TISSA Softball 2019/20
After all the rain the students and coaches went down to Taichung and Kaohsiung where the weather was like summer’s day. We had only managed to get to training once this season for softball due to all the rain. Our teams played with a smile and battled admirably against opposition who trained regularly. Highlight result was the y8 Boys coming in 3rd. Thank you to Raymond Imbleau, Paul Wright, Hamish McMillan Richard Luke and David Bracken who gave up their Saturday so that our students could play sports.

Daniel Chung Memorial Cup Match
This week saw the annual tip-off of the Daniel Chung Memorial Cup match between TES and DIS.
This annual match against DIS is to celebrate the life of Daniel Chung who passed away two years ago. He was a former student at DIS and then went to TES. This year the match was also an official Varsity TISSA Basketball match.
Mrs Chung was guest of honor at the game and was really touched by what she saw. It was an emotional occasion for everyone that attended, but it was an emotion of celebration rather sadness to remember a ‘dear friend’ Daniel Chung.

Daojiang High School & TAIPEI European School Exchange
On Saturday 16th of November, a group of high school softball enthusiasts from TES, participated in a friendly game with students from DaoJiang High School. This was an enlightening experience for all involved and ended with a great barbeque where we all bonded together and made new friendships.
The day began with students from TES eagerly awaiting the DaoJiang students. When they arrived there was a great deal of mutual respect shown and as soon as we were paired up together with them this respect quickly delved into comfort and playful banter. Initially we gave a tour of our school to them, and while showing them the gym we did what most students do when they see our gym: Play basketball. This playful interaction quickly set the tone for the day, being very encouraging and jolly.
We then went to play softball on the new pitch and did warmups together. Then staying in our pairs we played catch as they helped us with our technique and stance, we were very quickly humbled by how great they were, and soon later learned that they had been practicing every day since Year 2. After everyone felt warm we split ourselves into 2 different teams encompassing students from both schools.
They quickly showed their class in the field, taking outstanding catches, throwing bullets, and connecting with the ball very cleanly. However our students were not far behind hitting long home runs with considerable ease, boding well for the upcoming TISSA tournament. Bernard and George both brought the goods on the day, each hitting three home runs. We did have a lot to learn in the field and watching them was an important first step in that direction.
After the match all the students were treated to a smoky barbeque prepared by Mr Neurotsos, and both teams jumped on the opportunity to have amazing burgers, while bonding and talking. We learnt a great deal from the day, and hope to further our interactions with DaoJiang High School to build on the friendships that we built. Thank you to Mr Chow and Mr Imbleau for organizing this experience for us, as we ended up with great memories of the day.

We had the privilege of welcoming Louis Lancaster, who is the Manager and Head Coach of Chinese Taipei National Football Team, to Taipei European School to talk to the H1 and H2 students about his journey into professional coaching. It was a very insightful session and the students had many questions to ask, one particular question was a highlight for all students:
Q) Who is the better player Ronaldo or Messi?
A) I would chose Messi as the better player, but if I needed to win that particular match to save our team from relegation or save the planet, Ronaldo would be my choice as he wants to be that person. Whilst Messi would be great for a whole season of football, but I would not rely on him to save the planet.
Students valued the chance to hear from a professional about what a full time career in sport entails and the role that physical activity plays in one’s adult life.

Our Under 15 FOBISIA team competed this week in Phuket.
Mr Chow reflects on this experience below.
Please also enjoy our highlight video of the tournament!
As I write this short blog the students have had their gala dinner and are just winding down before “lights out” for bed. Our students have had a tremendous time and have definitely honored this year’s school motto of ‘stand up and stand out’.
A huge ‘thank you’ must go to many people who have made this trip such a success: To all of our parents for their support of the FOBISIA and TES Sports programmes. Also, to the coaches Ms Barry, Mr Lee, Mr Harris and Mr Woodall, my eternal gratitude goes to them for all the endless hours of coaching and being a great support on the trip.
It’s probably the toughest U15 FOBISIA games I been to in my 19 years involved with FOBISIA, but also one of the most rewarding in terms of seeing some of our perceived “fringe” players becoming key players at these games.
Now begins the trials for the U13s Fobisia games next week!
My last Fobisia
The strength of the wolves comes from the pack and the strength from the pack comes from the wolves“ Many of us have gone to fobisia in the past 6 years, this is the year we graduate.
Fobisia has always been our escape from reality, to release stress. Fobisia made us understand how important teamwork is and how sports really bonds people. In the past 6 years, we’ve created many precious memories that we would cherish forever. Every game is challenging but as team we battle and we support one another. We are most grateful for all of our past coaches for organizing this trip every year and we want to thank them for putting their time, effort and patience into trainings. Unfortunately we could not bring a medal back this year, but in every game we gave our 100% and thats what makes us the top team in our heart.
During basketball, we lost the game that could’ve got us third place, every player started to get tears filling up in their eyes. Even though we cried but we were all happy that we played so well as a team, also how much we’ve improved since the first day. Although for football we got sixth place but this was one of our best performance, the bruises and scars represents our hard work and how we persevered through all the toughest games.
We’ve learnt that no matter if victory or defeat, at end of the day we’re a team. We fight, we conquer, we succeed and we will always get better as a team.

Reflections from TISSA Season 1
On Saturday, November 2nd, the Y7 Girls’ Titans football team went to Morrison Academy Kaohsiung for the annual TISSA soccer/football tournament. It was a wonderful day down in sunny southern Taiwan!
The first match of the day was against Morrison Taipei at 9:50 in the morning. It was already very hot but we managed to score one goal against the other team in the first half of the game. After we had finished our halftime break, we played even harder than before but Morrison Taipei scored and we ended up 1-1. We then had our break where we ate BBQ burgers as well as some shaved ice to cool down. The next game was also against Morrison but was against Morrison Kaohsiung, our hosts. We played very hard and ended up 2-2 against the home team. We won our third game 10-0 against I-Shou International School and so we finished our round-robin play undefeated and we qualified for the semi-finals. Unfortunately, we lost to Morrison Taichung, the eventual champions, but we had lots of fun!
Thanks again to all the parents who woke up very early in the morning to take their children to the Taipei Train Station in the morning. It was a full day of travel and sport and it was a wonderful day that I will always remember. Can’t wait until next year!

Tissa Football reflection
On the second of November we went to Kaoshiang to compete against other international school teams at football. We showed a lot of the school values like Perseverance. Since We have only have one substitute since we have two teams and we have to play four 50 minute games with two halfs, but we showed perseverance and fought hard to win 2nd place, it was a wonderful experience for those who have not participated in tissa before and for them to win is a good start to year 7 sports, and now they know what we are going to do in the future. Also we showed respect to the other team by thanking the players, opponents coach and the referee; in favor to show our respect. All the teams were very skillful.it was a close match in the final, after 50 minutes nobody broke the deadlock so it went on to overtime. Both teams scored a goal during overtime, so we faced up to a penalty shootout. In the end we lost 2-1, it was a very intense match but sadly we couldn’t get the best result. It was a fantastic day and an amazing end to the football season, also a wonderful experience for teachers and students.

It was tremendous weekend of sport with our teams competing in Taiwan and South Korea. Our Junior Varsity teams battled really well in TISSA football and Volleyball and it was a great experience for our young teams as they played against much older students. On the Island of Jeju (South Korea), our Varsity Boys and Girls Competed in the annual Jeju Invitational Varsity Volleyball Tournament hosted by Korea International School, Jeju. Both teams competed well with the girls coming in 6th place and the boys winning the championship trophies.
Huge thanks to Mr Lee, Mr Harris, Ms Barry, Miss Feng and Mr Woodall for all their efforts coaching the students.
Below are some reflections from two students from the weekend of sporting action.
This year, our Varsity Volleyball team was invited to compete in the volleyball tournament held at the Korean International School Jeju. This was our first time playing in Korea and my second time playing outside of the country in front of large crowds of people, and everyone in the team was feeling excited yet nervous. It was a long journey to Jeju, but when we arrived at the school, everything seemed worth it. The school has a wonderful and amazing environment. We even had the opportunity to live in their dormitories which were equipped with great facilities for us to use.
There were 8 teams in total including ourselves, and on the first day there were group stages and on the last day, it was the decider stage. The group stage was an important part of the tournament because if we performed well on the first day, we would face easier opponents on the second day. The boys’ team was able to be placed second in the group stage, beating NLCS and DCS but unfortunately lost to KISJ, the host team, in a very tight match score. With this loss on the first day, our team felt worried because there were many stronger teams.
On the second day and the last day, we were promised to play 3 matches in total. If we lost all 3 matches, we would be placed 8th overall, but on the other hand, if we won all 3 matches we would win the tournament. But this did not prove to be easy. This was because winning the first match would mean that we would have to play off one of the best teams in our group, Chadwick, which had many outstanding players. Due to the matches being scheduled in this manner, the nerves were starting to get to our team. Nonetheless, our team did not let this affect us. All 3 matches were emotional rollercoasters which were insanely intense.
In the first match, which was a best of 3, we won the first set but lost the second set. As the last set was only up to first to 15, we were losing at 11:14 and came back all the way to 16:14 somehow, and with this win it allowed us to be qualified to the top 4. In the second match, which was also a best of 3 match, we lost our first match to CHADWICK by quite a lot. But on the second match, we somehow pulled it through with a score of 27:25 and in the last set we won by 17:16 as 17 was the maximum point of a match. This was really a turning point where we started to believe that we could actually win the tournament. For the finals, we were up against KISJ the host team again in a best of 5 match. It was so unbelievable that we somehow won against them by 3:1. We took the first 2 sets and it was really close too, we lost the third set but still was able to pull through in the fourth set to win the tournament with a 2 hours long match.
This tournament was not only an exciting and intensive experience, but also a stressful and anxious one. Even though it may sound exhaustive, but it really was a valuable experience as this is something we are not able to experience in our everyday life. It also showed us that challenges can be overcome, as long as we persevere. All the sweat, cheers and support for each enabled the whole team to, not only learn the importance of grit but also the significance of positive mindset. The team constantly encourages each other, and this is one of our main attributes to our success. Not only have we discovered the power of teamwork and unity, we realised that positivity plays an important role in the performance of a team which let us flourished in this tournament.
In the end, the team and I want to give a big thanks to our coach Mr. Lee for his dedication and effort that he puts into each and every training. He is one of the major reasons why we were able to win this tournament. Also another big thanks to Mr. Chow for arranging a place to compete for us outside of Taiwan allowing us to have such a great experience.
Bernard H3 – Boys Varsity Volleyball Captain
The tournament was a success. We faced so many challenges and setbacks. With half of our team being a year younger than most and and all three defenders injured in the last game; however, this didn’t stop us from achieving a placement of fourth. Overall, I was very proud of our team; especially those in year nine as most teams consisted of ages H1 to H3. In addition, I would like to thank our coach for the day, Mr. Harris for taking the team and sacrificing his day to assist us with his encouraging and advising coaching abilities.
Noah H1- JV Boys Football Captain

TES Triathlon, Yilan National Triathlon Championship 2019/20
Last weekend, nearly 30 TES students and parents attended the 2019 Yilan National Triathlon Championship. Most athletes travelled down to Yilan with their family on Friday evening and enjoyed a traditional Taiwanese meal together before the weekend's exertions. Early on Saturday, 7 ESC students gathered on the Start line at the edge of Meihua Hu (Plum Blossom Lake).
Athletes began the race in waves of 4 or more, swimming 150m around a pontoon before heading to the transition area to collect their bikes and set off on the 5km bike leg. Conditions were extremely hot and humid, so it was a tough ride, but at the end of the ride the athletes still had to muster the strength to run 2.2km around the lake to the Finish line.
It was a privilege to welcome Fijian National Volleyball Player
Sakiusa Vaka Naivana
(Wearing the number 3 Shirt)
to Taipei European School.
Our Varsity Boys Volleyball Team has great time trying to stop some of his amazing spikes and Sakiusa spoke :
‘Half his body is above the net before he even spikes’ were one of the comments I heard from the boys.
Thanks to Ben Chou ( our new external volleyball coach) for organizing Sakiusa’s visit to the school.
Interview with Jean-Marc Alexandre (Varsity Boys Football Coach)
We are proud to announce this year at TES, that we are investing in specialist coaches for our JV & Varsity teams in Football/Basketball/Volleyball to raise the standards of coaching and expertise we can give to our students. At the same time this year we are introducing ‘Character Building’ into our sessions. We will be profiling some of the coaches this year, starting with Jean Marc who was interviewed by Shubh. We are looking forward to the year ahead and below is Shubh’s interview.
I recently had the pleasure to interview Coach Jean-Marc Alexandre, Haitian national football player, with experience in the MLS. He is coaching the Varsity Boys Football team along with Coach Oliver, and I asked him a few questions to get to know him a little better.
You have had such an illustrious career so far, what has been the highlight during this time?
Playing for my national team. It is one thing to play for a club which represents a city, but a whole different thing to play for your country. I remember after the earthquake that happened in Haiti, for two years the national stadium was being used as a place of refuge. There were no games for that 2 year period. And I remember the first game we came back and played in that stadium; just the atmosphere, the fans, the fact that we won the game and people were actually in tears. For that brief moment, that 90 minutes, there was peace in the country and everyone was happy. That was definitely the highlight of my career.
From that emotional playing career, why did you transition into coaching?
Coaching is definitely a profession of influence, when I was a player I might have been able to influence one or maybe two players, but now as a coach I have the ability to influence a whole group of people, and do that in a positive way. For me it was an easy choice to transition to coaching,to be able to have that positive influence in other people's lives. I love this game, and there is no greater pleasure than to share it and pass it onto the next generation.
Being part of a team that you coach, I see you put a great emphasis on character building, and relating football to your life. Why do you feel that is important?
It is essential because the right character helps you in a game. Let's take for an example integrity. Integrity means doing the right thing all the time, even when it is difficult. If you apply that in a game, integrity means running back, defending even when you are tired because it's the right thing to do. When you take that and apply it into your life then it makes you a better person as a whole. For me football is only 1% of my life, outside of football I’m a father, I'm a son, I’m a husband and I’m a friend. That is why I want my players to build their characters, because off the field I want my players to be good sons and daughters, I want them to be good friends and I want them to be good students.
What are your future plans as a coach?
In the future I hope to learn as much as possible, because this is a transition period for me from playing to coaching. I am fortunate to have Coach Oliver who has been my mentor as a coach to really give me as much knowledge to coach and learn the game, because it is different from playing. In playing you feel as if you are in control, but coaching you have to trust your players. You have to do your job and trust you have done it well, so that they can execute the skills they have been learning throughout the training.

Congratulations to the 7 new Sports Leaders for 2019/20 this year for TES Titans, they are looking forward to the year ahead!
Angela
Hello, my name is Angela Chen and I am in H3. Volleyball has always been my favorite sport, the player that I look up to is Ivan Zaytsev. As the vice captain for the girls varsity volleyball, I think teamwork is the most important element in a team. In order for a team to successfully achieve teamwork, communication is also very important. I consider myself as an amiable person which means I have the patience to teach younger athletes. I am looking forward to this year’s sports teams.
Nicholas
Hi, my name is Nicholas Lee. I have been participating in TISSA sports since year 7. Although I am a member of several sports teams, I enjoy playing basketball the most and my favorite player is Kobe Bryant. As one of the co-captains of the Varsity Basketball team, I think leadership is an important character trait to have as both a player and a team member because it allows us to communicate, make decisions and co-operate with each other. I really look forward to being one of the Sports Leaders and working with you guys this year.
Sofia
Hi my name is Sofia Pellandini and I am 17 years old and I love doing sports. I have always participated in dance and football CCA since year 5 and also joined several dance competitions where we once came second in all of Taiwan. My favourite sport is dance. The payer I look up to is Roger Federer, who plays tennis. I think that a character trait a person needs when participating in a team sport is communication, because you need to be able to communicate and talk to the players in you team.
Arsalan
My name is Arsalan Mir and I have been playing sports since I was 4. My favorite sport is basketball, and I have grown an interest for volleyball recently. I have played for many of our teams and currently, I am in the volleyball and basketball varsity teams. The player that I look up to the most is LeBron James because of his work ethic and perseverance which brought him from being homeless to one of the most successful athletes of all time. LeBron James is also known to be a great leader on and off the court, and I hope that I can learn from him and become a good sports leader.
Evelyn
Hi, My name is Evelyn Di Rienzo and my favorite sport is football. The player I look up to the most is Alex Morgan, who is a forward for team USA. I’ve been participating in sports since I joined TES, and it’s been one of the highlights of my experiences here. In my opinion, teamwork is the most important trait to succeed in a sport like football, as it requires good communication between teammates in order to effectively pass and defend.
Charlotte
I am an H3 student and I love playing sports, especially football and basketball. I play for both Varsity teams and am looking forward to participate in the overseas tournaments. What I love the most about playing sports is the aspect of continuous learning; I want to be a better player than I was the day before.
Shubh
Contrary to a lot of the others, my favorite sport is one we do not play at school. I love cricket. My favorite player is Ben Stokes and watching him I have learnt resilience, and perseverance. During the T20 World Cup in 2016 he was tasked with finishing off the game for England, arguably being their best bowler. He choked, getting hit for 4 consecutive sixes (a rare feat in cricket). Many thought that he would never recover from that disappointment. Yet 3 years later, in one of the greatest finishes to a World Cup, he brought his team back from a position of certain loss and almost single-handedly won them the game.
Throughout those 3 years, his tenure as an English cricketer was mired in controversy, but regardless of the state he was in, or what was going around him, or even what the papers had to say about him, he kept on going. Put his head down and put in the hours, becoming the best he could be. In the end it all paid off, and he will go down as one of the best to have ever graced the game. I have a lot of respect and admiration for him and I would love to emulate his character traits within myself. I hope to bring these to the sports leadership team this year.
This year our sports leaders organised a tremendous 2018-19 Sports Awards, with over 370 people attending from the TES community. Our special guest of honour was Christian Loamanu, who delivered an inspiring speech. Please click here for the headline movie of the sports awards and also click here for all the articles from the sports awards and more.

On Sunday 28-April, over 40 TES athletes, from both campuses, represented our school at Challenge Taiwan 2019 in Taitung, arguably, the biggest triathlon event in the Taiwanese sporting calendar, with nearly 700 junior competitors aged up to 15. This was the inaugural outing of the TES Titans Triathlon Team (or "Team T3"). Over the past 6 months, students have trained to develop their swimming, cycling, transition and running skills in the lead up to this fantastic event.
14 students from ESC participated in the race, which required athletes to swim 350m across the open water of Taitung Flowing Lake, followed by a 5km bike ride and 2km run. They joined forces with over 20 triathletes from EPC to present a formidable combined force at the event. In spite of the initial fears of many parents regarding the difficulty of the course - particularly the swim - all our athletes proved that they were up to challenge, completing the race in style!
Top performances on the [stiflingly hot and humid] day came from Vinzent Schuett, who placed 18th out of 126 in his age group, completing the course in 34:05 mins. Not far behind was Georgia Stokes-Green, who crossed the line in 35:50 mins, placing 8th out of 99 in her age group. Other noteworthy performances came from Mia Yang and Jocelyn Chan, who both placed in the top 20 of the 11yr old girls' category, and Stefano Villa and Oscar Fret who finished in the top 40 of the boys' group.
Inspired by their great performances, and having thoroughly enjoyed the weekend, those that participated are eager to compete again, so why not join them at Chinese Taipei Triathlon Association's National Championships on September 7th!? Training sessions, which are open to adults and children, are held once a month at Zhoumei Sports Park, next to Beitou Incinerator. All are welcome to join for TES family fitness fun! For more information, visit the T3 team website and the Link to T3 Video on Youtube from Sunday's Triathlon.

Well done to all the students who participated in season 3. Hugh thank you to the coaches for the effort and time you put in!!
Hello, my name is Duncan and I am the TISSA Badminton champion for both singles and doubles. Even though it was my first TISSA tournament, I was composed due to my 4 years of training and previous competitions.
Firstly, I would just like to say how amazing of an experience it is to be participating in a large scale tournament such as TISSA. I have been to different tournaments before, and this one doesn’t disappoint. Through this process, I have developed a close friendship with my doubles partner: Dhruv. Furthermore, I was able to improve my badminton skills and strategy.
Winning required effort. I have to admit, my opponent in the finals was strong, and more to my disadvantage: he was almost two heads taller than me. In the finals, it was neck-to-neck, it was 1-1. Every point counted. Badminton isn’t just a physical game, it was a mind game as well. One cannot lose their cool as they would ultimately lose. I was anxious, but I persevered through the match. Every point was a cheer from my friends and supporters, every point was an increase in my confidence. The scores was 14-10, I looked my opponent in the eye, my mind was in a state of victory: we both knew it was over. When I won the match point and the scoreboard was 15-10, I let out a triumphant yell and punched the air.
Succeeding is no easy process, to get to this point I had to go through many hardships. I have dedicated many hours to training, to become a badminton player, so many hours that I eventually developed a passion. I have sacrificed my time, sweat and sometimes even tears when I no longer had the urge to continue. But the key being a good athlete and overall a successful person is to be resilient, to persevere, and to never give up.

'We have been in the same team together for three years now, and every year we start the season with little expectations other than to spend time playing a sport that we all enjoy. If you had asked us a week earlier, none of us would have ever expected to win second place at the tournament this year. And even though we all view it as a major accomplishment, we also feel like we have gained a lot more from this season than just a medal.
Teamwork is something that we have learned to appreciate, and how working with other people can also benefit ourselves. This was especially obvious to us during our matches, because without the strong teamwork and chemistry that we shared, it is hard to believe we would have ever been able to get second place. This is also the first year that we have been in the same team as people outside of our own year groups. Despite not having really ever talked to them before this season, having the chance to spend time getting to know them and being in the same team together, is also part of what made this season so enjoyable for us.
Perseverance is something else that we have developed throughout this season, and it was especially important when we were playing against a team that we were losing to: our final match against MAT was both challenging and frustrating, but even so, we persevered throughout the whole game and never gave up. And even though losing to them was disappointing, even more so because it was such a close game, knowing that we had tried our best was enough for us.
All in all, we are happy that our last JV Basketball season was such a good one, and grateful that we were able to make some of our most enjoyable and unforgettable memories through it. Hopefully our next season will be just as good!

On Wednesday 28th of November, we hosted the annual Daniel Chung Remembrance Match against DIS, Daniel’s former school.
It was a great match that was played with a spirit of competitiveness and fairness . Both teams played well and honoured their former teammate through the sport that he loved so much. Each year, The TES Titans play against a DIS combined Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball Team to mark our shared remembrance of Daniel.
Though our hearts carried sadness commemorating the loss of our friend this time last year, this game was the perfect way to remember Daniel at TES and the legacy he left behind. We’d like to express gratitude once more to Daniel’s mum and family, as well as the large crowd of his friends, classmates and teachers for attending the match and coming together to celebrate an unforgettable friend who was a shining light in not only our year group, but in the school community. Daniel left an irreplaceable mark in all of our lives and we hope that you will continue to remember and celebrate this wonderful young man with us forever.
