Thank you for registering for Hot Topics in Justice & Law. The bad news is that there are so many alarming and pressing topics; the good news is that we'll have an opportunity to learn from experts, in more depth than the usual newspaper article or television piece
Events are moving at a breakneck pace. I want to make sure that our discussions are timely, so I have not yet booked all of our sessions. But here are the topics that have already been scheduled. More details to come. My thanks to last semester's students for suggesting topics.
FEBRUARY 6th: The first topic for the semester is ICE. The former Chief of the Immigration Unit at the Regional U.S. Attorney's Office will discuss the roles, authority, and limits that apply to ICE enforcement, now and in the past. In addition, a lawyer activist will focus on what's happening in Philly, including what you should do if you see ICE, volunteer opportunities, and more.
FEBRUARY 20th: Public Health/Health Care. A doctor and an expert in public health law will speak. Topics that might be addressed include: vaccines, CDC v. NIH v. FDA, funding, the growing distrust of science, what can be done, and more.
FEBRUARY 27th: Not confirmed.
MARCH 20th: Not confirmed.
MARCH 27th: A former law school dean/constitutional law expert will analyze cases pending before the US Supreme Court such as the Birthright case. There may also be decisions in cases such as tariffs, voting rights, redistricting/gerrymandering, and presidents' right to fire heads of independent agencies.
I look forward to learning with you and "seeing" you soon.
Lynn
