Of course, mathematicians had been enjoying Pi Day for long before that—the Exploratorium in San Francisco, which is credited with inventing the holiday, holds a special celebration every year.

Many schools recognize Pi Day with mathematics activities, which typically include a contest to determine which student can recite the most digits of pi.
