What are the teachers at Monnig like?

All the teachers here are very nice and very helpful. Monnig teachers are very supportive. If you need extra help, they will offer extra tutoring or lunch tutorials to improve your grades and understanding of the topics learned in class. They will also give you extra time on assignments if you need more time. Overall, the teachers are amazing here!

What does safety look like at Monnig?

Our hallways are crowded like any school, but all students are encouraged to walk on the right side. Teachers are in the hallways, and they enforce hallway norms constantly to reduce issues during student transitions. Throughout the school day, we know that if we see something, we should say something.

What is lunch like at Monnig?

At Monnig, there are several options for hot lunch. Students sit at tables or may go to a teacher's room for tutorials if they are allowed. When students have finished lunch in the cafeteria, we throw away our trash. Sometimes we go outside, or we hang out inside the cafeteria and talk to our friends. We can also have our phones during lunch!

How do students handle not using a locker?

Our students handle it pretty well. It is quite different because you have to carry everything everywhere, but it is not terrible. Most of your work right now is on Chromebooks, so it is easy to carry what you need for school. If you play a sport or have Athletics, you can leave your uniforms and athletic gear in the locker rooms.

What is offered at the library?

The Monnig library offers many books for all genres. Some popular books offered at Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Harry Potter, and other incredible books. Our library is currently online due to COVID-19, but you can still check out books and return them!

What is Humanities?

Humanities is a fully-integrated course that combines English and social studies. You will learn world myths, Texas Myths, and American Myths as you progress through the course sequence. The class is likely the most rigorous class offered at any middle school in the district. Students are taught like they would be in elite private schools.

What advanced courses are offered?

At Monnig, there are various levels of each core class. We offer 6th grade accelerated math which leads students to take Honors Geometry in 8th grade, 6th grade honors math which leads students to take Honors Algebra 1 in 8th grade, and on-level 6th grade math which prepares students to take Algebra 1 in high school. For science, we have 6th grade pre-AP which leads students to take Honors Biology in 8th grade and 6th grade on-level which prepares students to take Biology in high school. Our humanities courses prepare students to be deep thinkers, great readers, and excellent writers. Students will leave middle school ready to take on any level of advanced English Language Arts course or Social Studies course offered in high school.

What is the difference between Athletics and PE?

The difference between Athletics and PE is that Athletics teaches and trains you in sports such as soccer, football, basketball, volleyball, and track and field. PE is more geared towards general fitness and exercising.

What is the GO Center?

The GO Center is a program where you can explore all your choices in higher education. You can explore a variety of colleges and high schools. If you are unsure of the career path you want to take, you can decide what interest you may like through the GO Center. Besides all the career choices and education, you can even get the chance to apply for scholarships! The GO Center has a lot to offer for you as a student at Monnig!

What type of clubs or organizations does Monnig have?

We offer different opportunities for students such as Student Council, Hope Squad, NJHS, Dance Ensemble, Battle of the Books, Academic UIL, and the Spelling Bee. Each option offers a unique way to express yourself.

What type of electives are offered?

Some interesting classes that Monnig offers under the electives program are art, dance, choir, piano, theater, photography, band, orchestra, and JCC. Dance offers three different levels and three different types of music styles: jazz, modern, and ballet. Select students may participate in Dance Ensemble. Piano also offers three different skill levels. You play many different songs and receive a set of music each week. Photography teaches you how to take and edit pictures. Band and orchestra allow students to learn to play an instrument or hone their skills if they already have experience. Choir students sing, perform at assemblies, and compete against other schools.

What incentives does Monnig have at the end of the 6 Weeks?

At the end of the 6 Weeks, Kona Ice comes as an incentive for any student that had perfect attendance and no tardies. You get early recess and the chance to buy Kona Ice.

What are House Days?

Each student is in a House, much like Hogwarts. There are four houses: Honoris, Fide, Factum, and Animo. There are different activities throughout the day, followed by an academic pep rally! We have House Day every 6 weeks.
