Read the information for an introduction to video recording and to learn more about the best practices for creating instructional videos.
To view the Best Practices in a new tab, click the button in the top right corner that looks like this:
There are many tools that allow teachers to create instructional videos. Many of these tools are screen recorders with a built in webcam option. This allows you to record the information in a computer application or your web browser, while also allowing students to see you, as you record your video. These tools allow teachers to record videos using digital whiteboards and/or online texts to explain concepts and ideas.
Some tools are desktop applications, some are web-based and some are browser extensions. Loom is both a desktop application and a Chrome Extension. In this course, we will focus on the features of the Chrome Extension, but there are additional features included in the Desktop version. Loom also has provided all educators with their Pro version for free. Be sure to use your FWISD Google Account when signing up to ensure that you receive the Pro upgrade.
Extensions are tools that work within your browser to increase or improve functionality. In Google Chrome, your extensions can be found in the top right corner of your screen next to the omnibox.
In this course, you will learn how to install the Loom Chrome Extension, but for further information about installing and managing Chrome Extensions, read the Google Page using the button below.
Review the chart to learn more about the three video recording tools that Educational Technology recommends. Use this information to determine which tool is the right fit for your needs.
Watch the GIF to learn how to install the extension. The direct link to the Loom extension is provided in Step 4.
When you install a Chrome Extension in the Chrome Web Store, it will download the file and then add the icon to your Extensions bar. Note that new extensions will probably be located in your Extension menu and can be accessed by clicking on the puzzle piece icon.
Once you have installed the extension, you will be prompted to Sign In or Sign Up. Select Sign Up and choose Sign Up with Google. Make sure to use your FWISD Google Account that ends with @teachers.fwisd.org to ensure that you receive the Loom Pro account.
Install the Loom extension and Sign Up using your Google Account. Use the tutorial in Step 3 for guidance.
Click on the button below to access the Screencastify extension in the Chrome Web store. Install the extension and login using your FWISD Google Account. By using your FWISD account, you will have immediate access to the pro version of Loom.
Click on the buttons to access the Loom Help Center website. Learn how to start recording your first video. There are text, video and GIF instructions in this section.
Click the button below to learn how to create a new video recording in Loom.
You may have noticed that you have the option to record either your entire desktop, a single browser tab or only your webcam. To learn more about these options, read below:
Current Tab: This feature allows you to record within a single tab. You can navigate to different websites within that tab, but you cannot record anything outside of that tab. This is a great feature if you want to avoid accidentally including your email or other sensitive information in your video. When you select this option, you can also choose to record your Tab Audio. This will allow you to record sound from a video, as well as your microphone, in one recording.
Full Desktop: This is a great feature that allows you to navigate between applications and tabs in your video. You can open a website in a separate tab, and it will continue recording. You can even record your computer applications, so if you have a lesson in ActivInspire, you can include it in your video. Note that you cannot record your computer sound using this option.
Cam Only: If you do not need to share information on your screen, the webcam option will allow you to just record a video using your front facing camera. This is a great option for recording a welcome, or introduction, video.
Click the button below if you would like to learn about the advanced options as you set up your recording.
The Loom Chrome extension does not include annotation features. These are included in the desktop application.
Click on the Loom Extension and record your first video. Try including each of the listed features.
Open your Loom extension and practice recording a video. Try using the following features:
Record your desktop. Open another application and include it in your recording.
Include both your webcam and the screen recording in your video.
Click on the button to access the Loom Help Center website. Learn how to trim and name your video.
Once you finish recording a video, it will open in a new tab and you will have the ability to do some video trimming. Loom allows you to crop any part of your video, a feature that sets it apart from the other video recording tools.
To learn more about how to trim your video, click on the button below.
Naming your video is very simple. Click on the title underneath your video and type your new title.
Using the video you recorded in Step 6, name your video and try using the trim feature.
Use your practice video from Step 6. Complete the following steps:
Name your video
Trim a section from the beginning, middle and end
Save your trim
Click on the button to learn more about how to add a Call-To-Action to your video. There are text and video instructions included on the page.
The Call-to-Action feature is unique to the Loom recording tool. When you add a Call-to-Action, a button will appear in your video that will direct your viewers to another website. This might be helpful to direct students to complete an exit ticket assignment in Google Classroom after watching your video. To learn more about this feature, click on the button below.
Helpful Hint: When you add a Call-to-Action, you are asked to provide a link to another website. Consider using the direct link to an assignment in Google Classroom to direct students to the next step in their learning. You can get the assignment link by selecting the three dots next to the assignment and clicking Copy link.
Read the information about sharing and exporting your videos.
Loom's sharing features are not quite as robust as Screencastify and Screencast-o-Matic's. It does not easily integrate with the G Suite products, so it will require some extra steps to assign videos in Google Classroom or upload them to YouTube.
Loom does have a nice link sharing feature that will provide you with some analytics. Viewers can also add emoji reactions and comments, if you allow those features.
Your Loom videos are automatically stored in your Loom account. You can access those videos using the button below, or by going to loom.com/my-videos.
There are three main ways to share your Loom video. Each of these ways is listed below and linked to an additional resource with instructions.
Download- When you download your video, it will be saved as an mp4 on your computer. You can then upload your video to YouTube and share it with your students in Google Classroom or on your Google Site.
Share Link- You can paste your video link in a Google Classroom assignment, email or Blackboard communication. With the link sharing option, you also have the ability to set a password to further protect your video. Additionally, you have access to viewer analytics when your video is accessed using the link.
Get Embed Code- If you would like to add your video to a website, you can use the embed code.
You will notice that you have far fewer options for sharing and exporting your videos in Loom as you do in some of the other video platforms. This is a limitation of this tool.
Use the information you from Step 9 to practice sharing your practice video.
Using your practice video from Step 6, try sharing it each of the following ways.
Copy the video link and include it in a draft email. (Note: You do not actually need to send the email.)
Create a new assignment in Google Classroom. Add your video link as an attachment. (Note: You do not need to post the assignment. You can also post it, but then delete it from your Google Classroom.)
Download your video as an mp4 file. Then, upload it to your FWISD YouTube Channel. (You will then want to delete your video from your YouTube Channel if you do not intend to use it for instruction.)
You must answer all questions correctly and receive a score of at least 80% to receive credit for this course.
