Benefits of Using Google Classroom
Integrates easily with G-Suite applications.
Allows students to interact and learn from each other. Plus, it creates opportunities for teachers to provide feedback and support in or out of the physical classroom.
Saves time. Students have all of the information in one easy to access place. No more forgetting assignments or materials at school. For teachers, they have all of the students' information, assignment submissions, and grades in one location.
Reflect: Why you are interested in using Google Classroom. What benefits does Google Classroom offer you and your students?

Read the information to learn how to create a new class.
After opening Google Classroom through the FWISD portal (www.fwisd.org/myfwisd), follow these directions to create a new class:
1. On the Google Classroom page, click Add+ in the top right-hand side next to the waffle/app launcher. Teachers should see the options to Join class or Create class. FWISD students only have the option to Join class.
2. A window will pop-up. Enter the Class Name in the space provided. Although you have the option to add Section, Subject, and Room information, it isnβt required. Once you have entered your information, click Create (bottom left of pop-up). You can go back and edit this information in the Settings if you need to later.
*The Add+ sign that you used to Create Class will be used by students when they join your Google Classroom. However, they will select the Join Class option and enter the provided code. You will learn where to find the code in our next lesson.
Log into your Classlink Portal and create a new class.*Although this step is not required to receive credit for this course, we encourage you to apply what you have learned so far.*

Read the information to learn how to add students and co-teachers to your classroom.
The easiest way to invite students to join your Google Classroom is to share the Join Code with them. Once students have the Join Code (located on the class header), students will follow these directions:
Open Google Classroom through the FWISD portal (www.fwisd.org/myfwisd). Students cannot join a class using their personal Gmail account. Always encourage your students to use the Portal whenever they are accessing any of their FWISD applications.
On the Google Classroom page, click Add+ in the top right-hand side, next to the waffle/app launcher. FWISD students only have the option to Join class.
3. Students will then enter the Class Code and click Join.
Before asking another teacher to join your Google Classroom as a co-teacher, it is important to know that co-teachers have many of the same rights as you do in the digital classroom.
Co-teachers can:
Create assignments
Give feedback on student work
Enter grades
Post on the class stream
Access the class Google Drive folder
Email teachers and students
Co-teachers cannot:
Delete a class
Remove the primary teacher from a class
Mute another teacher in a class
Follow these directions to invite a teacher to join your Google Classroom
Open the class you want to add the co-teacher.
At the top, click on the People Tab.
3. Click Invite teachers.
4. Enter the email address of the teacher you want to invite in the pop-up window. Remember to use first.last@teachers.fwisd.org. Then click Invite.
5. Invited teachers will need to sign-in to Classroom and click Accept on the class card.
Note: You can invite students to join the classroom by invitation as well. The process is the same except students' Google usernames are s123456@students.fwisd.org (123456 is their student ID). We donβt recommend doing this for every student. This should be used on a very limited basis for students who are having trouble joining the class using the join code.
Watch the video to learn more about how to create topics, assignments, and materials.
Practice creating a new topic, assignment, and material in your Google Classroom.*Although this step is not required to receive credit for this course, we encourage you to apply what you have learned so far.*
Read the information, and watch the animated slides to learn more about how to use the gradebook feature.
You can see all of the grades you've given in a class by clicking on the Gradebook tab. In this view, you can also see the status of an assignment. In one glance, you can tell which assignments have been turned in but are not yet graded, which assignments are missing, and which have already been graded.
Please note that when you grade an assignment in the Gradebook, the students will not see their grades until you click on the three dots next to the grade and select Return.
