Read the information on how to get logged into the MyFWISD Portal. where the icon to access Focus SIS is located.
Please note: new employees may not have access to the Portal until their accounts have gone through processing.
Focus is Fort Worth ISD's Student information System. This system provides many services to the district, but the two we'll focus on in this course are the digital gradebook and attendance-taking services. With Focus, teachers are able to look up student information, keep a log of assignments and grades, submit attendance, fill out disciplinary reports, and more!
Start by navigating to your Classlink Portal. Use the Classlink button below or type
into the omnibox, or address bar, of your browser.
Click Sign in with Microsoft and enter your Active Directory credentials.
First, you will be prompted to enter your email address. For most employees, your email address is your first name, followed by a period, your last name, and the @fwisd.org domain.
first.last@fwisd.org
If you have already reset your password, enter your new one on the following screen. If you have not yet reset your password, you will use the default password. Note that you will need to use your Employee ID Number.
You will likely be prompted to Stay signed in. If you are not on a shared device, you may select Yes.
Next, find the Focus icon and click on it.
You will automatically be logged into your Focus account.
Read the information to gain familiarity with the basic navigation of Focus SIS.
Once you are logged into Focus, you will see a portal page like the one displayed below.
Hover over the image below and circles should appear. Hover over the circles in the image to read information about these areas of high interest. Please note, these areas are just a few things available to you in the Focus system; this course will focus on the basics of navigating and using Focus, but it is not a comprehensive dive into all the system's features.
You can navigate through the Focus SIS by using the menu at the top of the page. Information displayed is filtered using the selections made in the upper-right corner. Which school year, semester, and even course are selected will affect the information you see throughout the site.
While looking at your courses in Focus, you may think that the course names look funny! Course names in Focus are built from various pieces of information. Read the information below to understand how those course names may be formed. Please note, there are thousands of different courses throughout Fort Worth ISD and even more variations of how those course names are put together; please understand that the information presented below is an example of how one course name was formed and is not an absolute truth of all course names represented in Focus.
Participate in the simulation to go through the steps of setting your display options in Focus.
If the simulation is too small, please use the link below the simulation to open it in a new tab.
In the "My Information ➨ Preferences" menu, users can customize the look of their own Focus display and even set up some functionality options to best suit the user's personal workflow. From banner color options to section combining for attendance, the Preferences menu allows for a personalized digital gradebook experience.
Note: It is a popular choice to "combine sections for taking attendance" so that all students physically present for a single class period appear in the same attendance list.
For more information on the Gradebook and Attendance options in the Preferences Menu, check out the following link (click on "Setting Display Options" when the site loads): https://focus.screenstepslive.com/s/teacher/m/62354/l/1161333-preferences#setting-display-options
Note: please consult with your department head, grade level team, and campus Focus data point of contact before making changes to your gradebook, especially after you have entered the first grades for the school year.
Read the information regarding customizing the Focus Gradebook.
In the "Grades ➨ Gradebook Configuration" menu, users can customize the appearance and settings of their Gradebook.
See the embedded resource below for a how-to on using this section of Focus:
A few items of interest in this section are:
Assignment Sorting: having assignments sorted in the Gradebook according to "Newest First" will keep the latest assignments you entered in the Gradebook closest to the student's name. Having them sort by Due Date will allow you to see assignment grades in the order in which they should be turned in by students. Categories will group assignments together so all test grades are in one area and all daily work in another, etc. This is up to user preference to decide which is most helpful to them.
Enter Student Numbers in Gradebook: this setting allows you to assign a special code to students so you can print or share grade reports without having the students' names and IDs attached. Please note, however, students do have their own access to Focus through www.fwisd.org/myfwisd to see their grades and parents have access after signing up for Parent Portal. Posting grades for the class to see is not a required practice. The most secure way for students to see their grades is by using their own access to Focus or by their Parents accessing Parent Portal.
Custom Grades: this section allows you to make a custom grade for either "Exclude" or "Zero" grades in the gradebook. A favorite of users is to add an "M" Grade for "Missing" and to either select that it is Excluded or a Zero in the gradebook. This helps teachers differentiate between students who scored a zero on an assignment and those who did not turn the assignment in. [See Figure 1 below]
Grade Title Colors: this setting allows users to change what color a particular grade-range displays in the gradebook. This color applies to the text of the grades in the gradebook. Many teachers like to change the color of "F" grades into another color so they're easily identifiable in the gradebook. [See Figure 2 Below]
Watch the video to learn how to create gradebook categories and assignments.
For this portion of the course, please watch the video in this playlist titled "Gradebook Lesson 2".
The image below displays how to access the 12-minute video.
When you're ready, please scroll to the video playlist under the image to begin. You do not need to watch more than the Gradebook Lesson 2, but you can if you choose to do so.
It is VERY IMPORTANT that your gradebook category weights add up to 100% before you begin entering grades into the system.
Please note: Please consult with your campus admin, grade level team, and your campus' Focus data point of contact before establishing your Gradebook categories and weights. Double-check your information before inputting the first grades for the year as editing afterwards will affect many items. As always, please refer to the District's Guide to Grade Reporting as well.
Read the information regarding taking attendance via List or Seating Chart view. There are also videos for Seating Chart view if you prefer to watch than read.
Attendance can be taken 2 main ways in Focus: by List or by Seating Chart.
List-view allows you to see all of the students in a single period in one LIST:
To learn how to take attendance using the LIST view, read the following Focus help materials:
Seating Chart view allows you to build a visual representation of your classroom, complete with furniture arrangements, and place students where they would physically sit in your classroom:
To learn how to take attendance using SEATING CHART view, either READ this resource or WATCH videos 1-4 on the page embedded below:
Participate in the simulation to go through the steps of submitting a discipline referral in Focus.
Teachers can submit referrals (administrative-action-needed or no-administrative-action needed) in the Focus platform. The simulation below will show you the steps for submitting a referral for a student.
As the year progresses and you discover other areas using Focus in which you need help, please refer to the Focus Help Materials linked in this section.
There is no action needed in this step for gaining course credit.
You must score 80% or higher to receive credit for this module.
