What is Culinary Arts?

Encompassing a diverse range of careers in the fields of Culinary Arts, Nutritional Sciences, Hotel Administration, Event Planning, even Outdoor Recreation and Tourism, Culinary Arts open students to a world of opportunities.

The Culinary Arts curriculum presents students with engaging, real-life experiences designed to develop a customer-oriented, collaborative approach to problem solving. Complemented by personalized Cooperative Education programming, industry-recognized certifications, and engaging reach ahead opportunities, our students gain a wealth of in-demand, transferrable skills and knowledge.

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) @ Western

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is an Ontario designation that allows students to focus on a possible career path that matches their individual skills and interests. Hospitality Studies is a bundle of 8 courses related to the Hospitality and Tourism industry. The SHSM program is a reach ahead experience which includes: sector-recognized certifications and training courses, experiential learning (including Cooperative Education credits), use of the Ontario Skills Passport and development of essential skills and work habits required in the sector, opportunities for Dual Credit programs in a variety of post-secondary institutions, and contextualized learning activities that integrate theory with practice. Students learn with industry standard equipment and instructors who have worked directly in the field. Students who complete the SHSM requirements graduate with a red seal on their diploma. This will indicate a universal provincial designation of a higher level of achievement to all post secondary schools no matter what program the student may choose to pursue.
