Education
Students with disabilities have various post-high school options to match their needs and goals. The accessibility services offices at all colleges and universities will review documentation with the student and determine if the accommodation request is for a disability-related need. Parents are encouraged to reach out directly to the post-secondary institution for additional information.
The Policy on Accessible Education for Students with Disabilities (2018) also outlines the criteria for the provision of medical documentation. The type of information students may generally be expected to provide to support an accommodation include:
That the student has a disability;
The limitations or needs associated with the disability;
Whether the student can perform the essential academic requirements, with or without accommodation;
The type of accommodation that may be needed to allow the student to fulfill the essential academic requirements.
Please note: An IEP from a public school is not required to access accommodations at a post-secondary institution.
Colleges and universities must support students with disabilities by providing accommodations through Accessibility Services (AS). Students must self-identify to AS staff. Learn more about documentation, rules and guidelines.
