The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a specialized program approved by the Ministry of Education that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
These programs enable students to gain sector-specific skills and knowledge in engaging, career-related learning environments, and prepare in a focused way for graduation and postsecondary education, training or employment.
Students who successfully complete an SHSM receive:
an Ontario Secondary School Diploma with an embossed SHSM seal
an SHSM record documenting their achievement
formal recognition on their Ontario Student Transcript
Some institutions provide scholarship opportunities for students who have earned an SHSM Red Seal.
Harbord Collegiate Institute runs the SHSM-Non-profit program.
The SHSM–Non-profit enables students to build a foundation of sector-focused knowledge and skills before graduating and entering apprenticeship training, college, university, or a position in the workplace.
Students will develop skills in the areas of problem solving, analysis, communication, cooperation, ethical values, consciousness, and citizenship.
With this Non-Profit SHSM you can choose to have a particular focus – for example, on international development or community action. This focus is achieved through the selection of the four major credits in the bundle.
Step 1: Review the information on this web site, attend an info session (will be posted here).
