BIBLIOTHÈQUE / LIBRARY
As you are aware, our class goes to the bibliothèque (library) with Ms Sakkalis every Day 1. She has prepared a small selection of beginning French readers for checkout. The text is simple and repetitive, therefore appropriate for our students. With a good French dictionary — try WordReference.com — you should be able to support your child. This coming Day 1 (Thursday, April 11), students will be permitted to select two books for checkout. One book must be chosen from among these beginning French readers.

If anyone is interested in taking on the responsibilities of Classroom Parent, please send me an email : email@example.com We would meet to discuss the needs of the class and the responsibilities you would like to take on. This job could even be shared by two or more parents.
A Classroom Parent might do tasks such as :
- Organize a class contact list to facilitate play dates and opportunities for students to connect outside the classroom.
- Attend all or most of the Islington JMS Parent Council meetings.
- Call or email parents to obtain donations of supplies for the classroom and/or events (i.e., boxes of tissues for the classroom or empty boxes for building activities).
- Consider becoming a member of the Toronto Freecycle group to obtain specific items for the classroom (such as the terrarium we are currently looking for).
- Call or email parents to line up chaperones for field trips.
- Find volunteers to help in the classroom, if needed.
- Send out reminders—via email, phone or notes that go home with the students—about upcoming events, meetings, field trips and needs for donations or volunteers.

WALKING EXCURSIONS & PARENT VOLUNTEERS
I am excited by the prospect of taking our students on walking excursions to nearby Tom Riley Park but we will need at least two parent volunteers for each trip.
If your schedule permits you to participate in our school day, I strongly encourage you to have a Police Reference Check completed. You can print the Reference Check Form on legal size paper at home or pick one up from the school office. You will need to attach a certified cheque or money order made payable to Toronto Police Services for $20.00 or a cheque for the same amount made payable to ISLINGTON JMS.
Please submit the form and the payment to the School Office.
If you have had a reference check within the past year, you simply need to complete the declaration online with the principal in the school office.

I have posted some information on our Assistance (attendance) and Quel temps fait-il ? (date and weather) routines on the Salle de classe page. Discussing these with your child will help support their learning. Perhaps begin by asking them about the pictures that I have posted on the Salle de classe page.

Yesterday, I sent out the first invitations to parents to view their child's Sesame Snap account via email. If you did not receive an invitation, please check your spam folder. If there is nothing there, please send an email to me here : firstname.lastname@example.org
I use Sesame Snap as an assessment tool. You can support your child's learning by discussing with them what they are doing in class. The Sesame Snap entries and this site will help you do that.
With regards to the initial activities you see posted in Sesame Snap, I am noticing how students follow instructions and observing what they know about letters and numbers. Reversals ("backwards" letters and numbers) are common at this age and should not cause alarm.

DOCUMENTS SENT HOME TODAY
Please check your child's pochette violette (purple plastic pocket folder) for important documents and permission forms being sent home today. It would be much appreciated if you could have these verified, signed and returned to school as soon as possible.
Merci ! (Thank you!)
BIENVENUES À L'IMMERSION FRANÇAISE !
mardi, le 4 septembre 2018
Dear Students and Families,
Welcome to Senior Kindergarten and French Immersion! I’m excited to get to know you all and looking forward to a happy and productive school year.
We will use rhymes, songs, oral storytelling, arts integration and STEAM (en français, STIM) to engage your students and begin building French vocabulary. I will communicate classroom activities with home through this TDSB Google Site. If you do not have consistent internet access, please let me know as soon as possible so that we can arrange alternate means of school-home communication.
Please send a box or bag with a change of clothes and a pair of indoor shoes (running shoes are best) to be kept at school. All belongings should be labelled with the student’s name. Students will take these items home at the end of the school year in June. It would also be a tremendous help if each student brought in one or two boxes of tissue to share with the classroom.
Each student is bringing home a paper bag today. S/he should fill the bag with three to five objects that are special to her/him or that speak to who s/he is and bring it back to school tomorrow. Students will take these objects back home once they have shown them to the class and talked about their importance to her/him.
Below, you will find information regarding our classroom. If you have any questions or concerns, would like to visit our classroom or schedule a conference, you can contact me by email. The Kindergarten Team is working on a shared schedule for the outdoor space. Once our schedule has been finalized, I will send a hard copy home as well as post it online.
*** Children will go out for outdoor play daily, so be sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.
Once again, welcome to Senior Kindergarten French Immersion. Let’s work together to make this the best year ever!
Mme Cristina González
TDSB Google Site : Please take time to look through this website which is my primary communication tool with parents. I use this "Accueil" page to post general announcements. On the "Salle de classe" page, I post information about classroom activities and home practice. On the " Agenda" page, I do my best to keep the calendar up to date with school and classroom events. On the "Ressources françaises" page, I have posted links to some French learning resources and websites. If you do not have consistent internet access, please let me know as soon as possible so that we can arrange alternate means of communication.
Plastic Pocket Folder : Students will be provided with a plastic pocket folder. All printed documents (i.e. permission forms, monthly newsletters, notes to and from the teacher, etc.) and student work will be sent to and from school in this folder. Students should carry their folder in their schoolbags at all times.
Sesame Snap : I use Sesame as an assessment tool and to record student work. I will also share students' portfolios with parents via an email invitation. Please use Sesame to support your child’s learning by discussing what s/he is doing in class. Students will learn to upload their own work to Sesame.
SCHOOL ENTRY AND DISMISSAL
The Kindergarten playground is supervised beginning at 8:45 a.m. daily. The school day begins at 9:00 a.m. Students will be dismissed from along the wall by Exit #3 at 3:15 p.m. Please pick up your child promptly to avoid heavy student traffic at 3:20 p.m. when Grades 1-8 are dismissed. If you have children in other classes, please pick up your Kindergarten child first.
Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. in our classroom. Students who are going home for lunch will be escorted to the office for pick up. After lunch recess, all students will line up at their designated line up area in the Kindergarten Yard at 12:45 p.m. Please make sure to bring two nutritious and nut-free snacks along with their lunch. Please inform me (in writing) if your child will not be present during lunch time or if he/she will be picked up by someone else.
CHANGE OF CLOTHES / INDOOR SHOES
Please send a box or bag with a change of clothes and a pair of indoor shoes (running shoes are preferred) to be be kept at school. All belongings should be labelled. Students will take these items home at the end of the school year in June.
VOLUNTEERING IN THE CLASSROOM
Parent volunteers are a tremendous asset to our classrooms and to student success. With help from parent volunteers, we will be able to take more walking excursions and field trips. Your assistance is also greatly appreciated in the classroom as reading buddies or with events such as Scientists in School. In order to be able to volunteer at Islington JMS, you must have a police record check completed. You can pick the form up from the office. The sooner we have parent volunteers with completed police record checks, the sooner we can begin planning excursions.
POKÉMON, TOYS & PERSONAL PENCIL CASES
Pokémon cards, stuffed toys and personal items such as pencil cases with markers and pencil crayons are a source of conflict in the school and in the classroom. The same is true for personal devices, action toys and stuffed animals. Please leave all the above mentioned items at home.
We have plenty of shared toys, writing and drawing materials in the classroom, including pencil grips for those who require them.
Thank you so much for your cooperation.
