Kyle Werve

 Kyle Werve graduated from Taylorville in 1994 and lettered 3 years in basketball and one year in cross country. He continued his education and athletics at Aurora University where he continued to excel on the Spartans Basketball Team. Living in Mt Auburn, Kyle Werve became a Taylorville Tornado at the beginning of his sophomore season, as the high school students from Mt Auburn began tuitioning in to Taylorville High School that year. Already a varisty player during his freshman year in Mt Auburn, Werve became an immediate contributor of the bench for his new team in Taylorville.    It was in 1992-93, during his junior year, that Werve began to make a solid contribution to a successful team that shared the Apollo Conference Championship. He led the 17- 9 Tornadoes in scoring with 402 points and was selected to the Apollo All Conference first team. He also was selected to the Decatur and Charleston All Tournament teams that year.     The following year, Taylorville’s first in the newly formed Central State 8 Conference, Werve scored 416 points and helped lead the team to a 15 -12 record. He was selected to the first CS8 All Conference Team, as well as to the Decatur Herald and Review All Area Team and received Honorable Mention to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association All State Team. He finished his career with 903 points, placing him 13th on the tornadoes all time career scoring list.     During his only season on the Tornadoes cross country team in the fall of 1993, Werve was selected as the team’s Most Valuable Runner.

Following graduation, Werve received a scholarship to attend Aurora University and play basketball under the coaching tutelage of Taylorville Hall of Famer, James Lancaster. During his career with the Spartans, Werve scored 1,182 points, placing him 18th on the schools’ all-time scoring list. He was named to the Northern Illinois- Iowa Conference All-Conference team as a sophomore and a junior. He earned Aurora MVP honors as a sophomore and was selected to the NCAA Division III All Region team that year. For his career at Aurora, Werve averaged 14.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.06 assists per game, while shooting 35.8% ( 131 -366) from three point range .
