Mike Mayer

Mike Mayer , a Tornadoes stand out in three sports graduated from Taylorville High School in 1975.     He was a standout the first day he stepped on the football practice field his sophomore year. He brought with him size, speed and the versatility to play a variety of positions. Lettering three years, he played mostly in the offensive line and at line backer on defense. He was often inserted into the backfield on short yardage situations to both lead the blocking and sometimes carry the ball.    His strong play and leadership help the Tornadoes to Mid-State Conference Championships in both 1973 and 1974 as well as to the Tornadoes first ever Illinois State Playoffs in 1974. Following his senior campaign, Mayer was selected to the All-Mid-State Conference First Team and also the All State Football squad.    Following the fall season, Mayer became a member of the basketball team, where he earned varsity letters in both his junior and senior season. 1975 allowed him the opportunity to be a contributor to his second Mid-State Conference Championship, as the basketball team won the conference that year.'

Spring brought Mayer to the baseball diamond where he lettered three years. He helped add a third conference championship during the 1974 season.

Following his graduation from Taylorville High School, Mayer received a scholarship to play football at the University of Iowa, where he lettered all four years as a member of the Hawkeye football team.
