Harold “Cap” Henson was a 1950 graduate of Taylorville High School and was a member of the football and track teams. On the football team he played both sides of the ball as an offensive and defensive tackle. As a senior, “Cap” was named team captain, was selected to the All-Mid-State Conference team and earned honorable mention All-State honors. Henson is notably remembered for establishing the Tornadoes school record with an 89 yard punt during his senior season.
On the basketball court, Harold Henson was a two year varsity player and was voted team captain his senior year. It was in that year that the Tornadoes completed a 24- 9 season that ended with an IHSA Regional and Sectional Championships and a trip to the “Sweet Sixteen” at the University of Illinois.
On the track team, Henson advanced to the IHSA State track meet, representing Taylorville in the Shot Put. After graduation he accepted a scholarship to play football at Purdue University. However, he later transferred to Iowa State University, but returned to Purdue where he received his undergraduate degree.
