Gary Farr

Gary Farr graduated from Taylorville High School in 1971. He earned a total of eight varsity letters in football, basketball, baseball and track.    As a three year letter winner on the Tornadoes football team, Farr was a starting tight end his junior year and became the “go to” fullback his senior year. During that 1970 senior season, Farr totaled over 1045 yards rushing. His offensive highlight of that season was against the Effingham Flaming Hearts, as he carried the ball 38 times for 168 yards as the Tornadoes tried to maintain ball control throughout the game. Farr was a two way player and as a linebacker he averaged 9 solo tackles a game. Selected by his teammates as co-captain in 1970, Farr also was selected to the All- Mid State Conference first team, Special Mention All-State by the Chicago Daily News and the Illinois Prep Sports Special and was a First Team All- Area Selection by the Decatur Herald and Review.

Following his senior season, Farr was recruited and was signed to attend and play football at Memphis State University.

In the winter, Farr was a contributor to the Tornadoes basketball team. A starter in both his junior and senior seasons, Farr was counted on to be an aggressive re-bounder while averaging just under ten points a game.

A letter winner on the baseball team his sophomore season, Farr focused on track his junior and senior years leading the Tornadoes as their number one shot putter and discus thrower. He even set the team record in the High Jump.

At Memphis State, Gary Farr lettered on the freshman team, as freshman we not eligible to play on the varsity during those years. He earned varsity letters in 1973 and 1974 as an offensive center and guard for Coach Fred Pancoast’s Tigers football team. During those years, Farr competed against such teams as Auburn, Cincinnati, Louisville and Florida State. Injury cut Farr’s football career short at Memphis, but he continued to contribute to the program as he was chosen to serve as a graduated assistant coach and as team scout.
