Schultte Bishop

Schultte Bishop a four year member of the Taylorville High School football, basketball and baseball teams, will be inducted in the Taylorville High School Sports Hall of Fame, Saturday, April 21 at a banquet to be held in the auditorium at St. Vincent's Memorial Hospital.

Bishop, most notably remembered as the point guard on the 1944 state championship basketball team, was also a contributing member to both the baseball team and the football team. He played shortstop on the baseball team that swept trough the 1944 season with a 13- 2 record, losing in the sectional finals to Lanphier and Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Robin Roberts.

In the fall of 1943, Bishop played halfback on offense and linebacker on defense on the Purple Tornadoes football team that completed their regular season undefeated, losing only to Champaign High School 7-0 at Memorial Stadium in a challenge game to determine the "mythical state champion?' During this remarkable season, Bishop scored six touchdowns, the longest being a sixty yard run against Hillsboro and played the final three quarters against the undefeated Beneld team with a broken hand.

It was during the basketball season that Bishop and his Taylorville Tornadoes' teammates made Illinois State High School history. As starting guard on the 45 - 0 state champions., Bishop was singled out to guard the leading scorer or best ball handler on the opposing team. Utilizing his speed and quickness, Bishop pressured his opponent full court the entire game. His crowning defensive achievement came in the semi-final game against Champaign, when he held Jesse Clements, the teams leading scorer to 0-9 shooting from the field in the Tornadoes 40- 36 win.

Bishop was selected to the 2nd team All-State Tournament Team and received honorable mention status on the All State Team. Following graduation, Bishop attended the University of Illinois and worked and retired from the Peabody Coal Company, He currently lives in Taylorville.
