Why Middle School?
Grades 5-8
Recognizing that each student lives a variety of lifestyles and experiences outside of the classroom is crucial to remember. With a collection of literature that caters to a variety of readers and interests, students can utilize the stories as a form of self-care and meditation. With stories that reflect their experiences or provide an alternate reality, students can seek comfort in the pursuit of reading.
Between the ages of 10 and 14, these young adults are experiencing many forms of self-discovery. Many students question their identities and emotions, attempting to find who they truly are and where they feel they fit in. In an open classroom with literature that reflects their feelings and experiences, they can seek comfort in your space.
In this age group, there is pressure to grow up, leaving students stuck between childhood and adulthood. Many students are learning at different paces, each with unique strengths. Having access to novels that spark imagination and reflect reality can cultivate environment of exploration and open discussion. This reduces the outside pressures they may experience in their personal lives.
My name is Karyna Keegan and I am an English and Secondary Education major at The College of New Jersey, graduating class of 2027. Ever since I was a little girl, I have always wanted to become a teacher. My mother is a teacher and has been my biggest inspiration and role model throughout my education career, inspiring me to become the best educator I could possibly be. I have had a passion for learning all my life, and combined with my love for literature, created the perfect profession. Throughout my life, highlighting grades K-12, I struggled with anxiety that was emphasized by the school environment. My goal as a teacher is to create a classroom environment that is not only warm and welcoming but also a place for students to feel accepted and safe as a class community. I want to encourage conversation and dialog, allowing each student to have a voice through preferred expression. I carry these morals with me as a student and channel them as the foundations of my educational road to becoming a teacher.
