Q. Can all grades go out for lunch?

A. As grade 9’s and 10’s may not be familiar with the downtown area, for safety reasons we are only allowing grades 11 and 12 to leave the school premises for lunch.

Q. How much does cafeteria food cost?

A. The cafeteria food is available for purchase throughout both lunches, and a full meal would cost about $6. Cookies and brownies are $1 each. The meal consists of the main course, a side and a dessert.

Q. Do we get our own lockers? Do we get a new locker each year/semester?

A. You will be assigned your own locker in grade 9, which will then be your locker up until grade 12.

Q. Are we allowed to wear our own shirts/ shoes/shorts to physical education class?

A. Our gym uniform consists of the SJCS top and shorts which are required for any gym class. However, your gym shoes can be any colour as long as they are proper running shoes.

Q. How many lunches are there?

A. Our schedule consists of two lunches. Lunch 3A which is from 11:18 to 11:58 and Lunch 3B, from 12:36 to 1:16.

Q. Can we decorate our lockers?

A. Yes! St. Joes students are encouraged to decorate the insides of their lockers. They are also encouraged to decorate the outside of their peer’s lockers for their birthdays.

Q. How will I remember where my classrooms are located in the school?

A. The school is in the shape of a square, meaning, if you’re unable to find your classrooms, walk around the hallway until you’re able to find your class. It may take a few tries to find your classes, but do not worry, the numbers of the classrooms are very visible.

Q. When will I get my schedule?

A. This year’s schedules will be sent out in the August mailing. Keep an eye out for them!

Q. What is the difference between the rhythm and movement course and phys-ed?

A. Rhythm and movement focuses more on the dance aspects, whereas phys-ed is based more on sports activities

Q. I am interested in a club but it does not exist at St. Joes, what can I do?

A. Starting a club at St. Joe’s is easy! All you need to do is find a teacher who is able to be your club’s moderator and enough students who are interested as well. Once you find both, you are all set!

Q. What shoes are acceptable?

A. All black - including shoe laces and soles.

Q. How is the school protected? Is the front door locked? Is the neighbourhood safe. Do you have any tips on staying safe on the way to the Wellesley subway or in the station?

A. Front door is locked starting at 9:00 am. Secretaries screen who enters the school. We have monitors to see who is at the door. People need to call and you dentist themselves to be let in.

Tips on staying safe: travel to and from school wit a friend/classmate, if possible.

The neighborhood is safe. If students notice anything unusual and they don’t feel safe, they can - return to school immediately and report to admin, call 911, let parents know. Always inform the office of any unusual situations.

Q. Is the library open after the end of day bell rings? Can I go there to study between classes or after school? Where else could I go to study after school at the school?

A. The library is open until 4:00 pm. The study carrels in front of student services are also a space for studying after school, they are always open. There are also desktop computers there.

Q. Is there a debate team?

A. There is no debate team currently, but we do have a model UN. However, we highly encourage you to start your own club if you want to see a debate club at St. Joe’s

Q. Is it hard to make the sports teams?

A. It is not hard to make a sports team if you understand how to play the sport. There are a lot of very athletic people at the school, but coaches look for a bunch of stuff, like teamwork, work ethic, attitude, willingness to improve and skill.

Q. Do you have a badminton team?

A. St. Joes does have a badminton team.


Q. What kind of food do they serve in the cafeteria?

A. The most frequent food served at the caf is pizza, pasta, and chicken with either potatoes or rice. They also serve really good cookies and brownies.

Q. Can a club turn you away?

A. A club won't tell you that you can’t join, but you have to be committed and go to the meetings and stay involved.

Q. Are there any restrictions on nail polish?

A. Here at St.Joes we have no restrictions on nail polish. However, we prefer that you have a short to medium nail length, especially because of safety reasons.

Q. Do we need any of our own devices for high school? eg. Computer

A. You do not need your own devices. At SJCS we have a computer lab as well as a printer and photocopier. If you do not have your own devices you are welcome to use ours in the library.

Q. What mental health resources are available at SJCS?

A. At St. Joseph’s College School we have a lot of mental health resources available. If you want to know more about them they are displayed under the SJCS caring adult section of our school website.

Q. Will exceptions be made for late assignments due to mental health issues?

A. Yes, we will always do our best to support you. Be sure to speak to your teachers and guidance if you need to have accommodations made. There is always someone there to listen.

Q. How do we get into student council, what is the process and what is the limit for how many students are supposed to be in student council?

A. Towards the end of grade 9 you will hear announcements in order to pick up an application for you to apply

  • If you meet all criteria you are able to apply.

  • You will fill in questions (leadership qualities and others qualities that make you eligible) and provide teacher references in these forms.

  • Next you’ll have interviews with the moderators to ask you about some of the things you wrote down in your application.

  • During the election you will be able to put up posters to help you campaign. You will also give a short speech in front of your peers to talk about why you are fit for that position.

  • Students will vote for their Student Council. If you have no competition you’re automatically on the council, but if you do you have competition the voters Will choose who they want to represent them.

Q. Do you vote for student council every year?

A. Yes you vote for student council every year.

Q. How many members are on student council?

A. There are usually 14 members on our student council.

Q. What if your pants don’t have a SJCS printed on them?

A. You cannot wear them if they do not have the SJCS logo or SJCS embroidered on them.

Q. Do you only wear a tie in grade 12?

A. Yes only grade 12’s are allowed to wear ties.

Q. If you are trying out for a sports team do you use your own clothes?

A. Yes, if you are trying out for a sports team we recommend wearing something comfortable that you are able to move in.

Q. When and where can we buy Spirit wear?

A. Spirit wear is sold by GAA in the foyer during the fall and sometimes in the spring. You can also purchase spirit wear from certain clubs or sports teams that you join.

Q. What is the dress code for civvies days?

A. On civvies days you will need to dress in appropriate attire for a learning environment.

Q. How many classes do you have each semester?

A. At SJCS we are a semestered school, so we have four classes each semester.

Q. Does the office need an EpiPen for students with allergies?

A. Yes, the office does need an EpiPen for all students with severe allergies in case of an emergency.

Q. Are we able to borrow pieces of the uniform from the school?

A. Yes, the office carries extra uniform pieces in case you are missing a piece or forget something at home. You are able to sign out pieces and sign them back in at the end of the day. If you require financial assitance, please speak to our Vice Principal in September.

Q. Are you able to wear a belt?

A. Yes, if you need a belt you are allowed to wear one.

Q.How big are the lockers/ how wide are they? What type of locker shelves do you recommend/ what are popular options in the school? Are there some locker accessories that are recommended for our lockers?

A. Lockers are about 10 inches wide. For locker shelves, don’t get flimsy dollar store ones that break. We really like the ones you can get for the floor and not the floating ones because they fall a lot. You can get some yourself a whiteboard or mirror for the inside of your locker.
