The IRS Free File program at irs.gov/freefile offers taxpayers two main options for filing federal tax returns for free, depending on their income level and filing requirements:
Free File Software
This option is for taxpayers with an annual income of $73,000 or less (through 2023).
The IRS partners with tax software providers to offer free online tax preparation and filing. Taxpayers answer simple questions about their income, deductions, and credits, and the software performs the calculations and submits the tax return electronically to the IRS.
Many of these programs also offer free state tax filing, although availability and criteria vary by state.
The software option provides step-by-step guidance to help maximize credits, deductions, and refunds.
Free File Fillable Forms
This option is for taxpayers whose income exceeds $73,000 or for those who prefer a do-it-yourself approach without software guidance.
Free File Fillable Forms are electronic versions of IRS paper forms. Taxpayers input their information directly on the forms and do the calculations manually.
This is best for those who are comfortable filing on their own, as there is little guidance, and it's up to the user to know what forms and calculations to use.
There is no state tax filing option with Free File Fillable Forms.
