By the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful

The narration of Hārūn b. Mūsā b. Aḥmad al-Tallaʿukbarī, may God be pleased with him, from Abū ʿAlī Muḥammad b. Hammām. Abū Muḥammad Hārūn b. Mūsā b. Aḥmad al-Tallaʿukbarī said: Abū ʿAlī Muḥammad b. Hammām b. Suhayl narrated to us. He said: Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Khāqān al-Nahdī reported to us. He said: Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Ibrāhīm al-Ṣayrafī, Abū Samīna narrated to us. He said: Abū Saʿīd al-ʿUṣfurī, and he is ʿAbbād, narrated to me from ʿAmr b. Thābit, and he is Abū al-Miqdām, from his father.

He said: I heard Abū Jaʿfar عليه السلام saying: How would you be, O Abū al-Miqdām, when there is an authority (in power) (error in print – سيطة should be سيطرة) between the two sanctuaries (Mecca and Medina) concerning which you remain perplexed and you do not find any support who you could take recourse to nor do you comprehend a thing from another?

I said: Will it indeed be so?

He said: My father used to say that and he would say: God does what He pleases and He erases and He establishes and with Him is the Mother of the Book.

ʿAbbād from ʿAmr from his father from Abū Jaʿfar. He said: God created a light, and from that light He created “Say: He is God, One”. And He created a thousand wings of light for it, and sent it down to His earth with His trustees from the angels. Not a congregation of the angels passes by but that they bow down to it, saying: The attribution of our Lord, the attribution to our Lord.

ʿAbbād from ʿAmr from Abū Ḥamza. He said: I heard ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn عليهما السلام saying: God created Muḥammad and ʿAlī and eleven from his sons from the light of His majesty. He raised them as phantoms in the luminosity of His light. They worshipped Him prior to the creation of creation, glorying God and sanctifying Him. And they are the Imams from the sons of the Messenger of God.

ʿAbbād going up to Abū Jaʿfar عليه السلام. He said: The Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وآله said: From my sons are eleven highborn chiefs, spoken to (i.e. by the angel) (muḥddathūn), made to understand (mufahhamūn); the last of them is the Qā’im by the Truth; he will fill it (the Earth – alt. ms) with justice as it had been filled with inequity.

ʿAbbād from ʿAmr b. Thābit from Abū Jaʿfar from his father from his fathers. He said: The Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وعليهم said: The stars of Heaven are a safeguard for the inhabitants of Heaven; so when the stars of Heaven go there shall come to the people of Heaven what they dislike. And the stars from the People of my House from my sons are eleven stars, a safeguard in the Earth for the inhabitants of the Earth lest it shake with its people. And when the stars of the People of my House go away from the Earth, there shall come to the people of the Earth what they dislike.

ʿAbbād from ʿAmr from Abū al-Jārūd from Abū Jaʿfar عليه السلام. He said: The Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وآله said: I and eleven of my sons and you, O ʿAli, are the knobs of the earth, namely its pegs, its mountains. And he said: God fastened the Earth lest it sink with its inhabitants. So when the eleven from my sons go, the earth will sink with its inhabitants and they shall not be granted respite.

ʿAbbād from ʿAmr from his father from Abū Jaʿfar عليه السلام. He said: I heard him saying: Were the earth to remain a day without an Imam from among us it would sink with its inhabitants and God would punish them with the severest of His punishments. That is because God made us as a Proof in His earth and as a security in the Earth for the people of the Earth. They will never cease to be in security from the sinking of the earth along with them as long as we remain in their midst. So when God intends to destroy them, He will not delay them nor shall He grant them respite. He will take us away from their midst and raise us towards Himself. Then God will do with them whatever He wishes and likes.

ʿAbbād from ʿAmr b. Bayyāʿ al-Sābirī from Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad عليهما السلام. He said: The land of Kaʿba said: Who is like me while the House of God has been created on my surface? People come to me from all directions and I have been made a sanctuary of God and His security.

So God revealed to it: Stop and settle down, by My Might there is not a favor which you have been favored with (in comparison to) what I have granted the land of Karbala except in proportion to a needle submerged in the sea; then it is borne by the water of the sea. Were it not for the soil of Karbala, you would not have been favored. Had you not been enclosed by the land of Karbala I would not have created you nor would I have created the House which you take pride over. Settle down and become settled, and be lowly, humble, servile and contemptible, not boastful and not conceited against the land of Karbala, otherwise, I will be displeased with you and will throw you into the Fire of Jahannam.

ʿAbbād from ʿAmr from his father from Abū Jaʿfar عليه السلام: God created the land of Karbala prior to the creation of the land of the Kaʿba by twenty four thousand years and consecrated it and blessed it. It has not ceased to remain consecrated and blessed prior to God creating the creation and shall not cease to be so until God makes it the best land in the Garden and the best station and abode which God will make His friends in the Garden dwell in.

ʿAbbād from a man from Abū al-Jārūd. He said: ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn صلى الله عليه said: God took the land of Karbala as a sanctuary and security, blessed, prior to creating the land of the Kaʿba by twenty four thousand years. When God will raze the Earths (when God has changed the Earth – alt. ms), He will raise it as it is entirely, luminous, clear, and render it in the best of meadows from the meadows of the Garden, and the best abode in the Garden, none dwelling in it save for the prophets and messengers – or he said: the possessors of constancy (ūlū al-ʿaẓm) from the messengers. And it shall radiate from the meadows of the Garden as the brilliant star radiates from (amidst – alt. ms.) the stars for the people of the Earth, its light covering the vision of all of the people of the earth (the Garden – alt. ms.), and it calls out: I am the holy land of God, and the blessed soil which includes the Master of the martyrs and of the youth of the people of the Garden.

ʿAbbād from Ismaʿil b. Dīnār from ʿAmr b. Thābit from Sālim b. Abī Ḥafṣa from Sālim b. al-Jaʿd from Ṭāriq b. Shihāb. He said: I heard ʿAlī عليه السلام say: Whoever wants to affirms, and whoever wants to denies, perpetually, and the companion of the two of them (reading صاحبهما instead of صاحبتهما, as found in a ms.) is in the Fire of Jahannam.

Abū Saʿīd ʿAbbād from ʿAmr b. Thābit from Muḥammad b. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAqīl from Fāṭima bt. al-Ḥusayn عليه السلام. She said: A man from Banū Asad came to my father عليه السلام and said: What is the state of a people who command you against your father while they did not take him as commander?

He said: Indeed the people pledged and made a firm resolution that they shall not take my father as an authority.

ʿAbbād from Safīr al-Ḥarīrī from his father from al-Sadiq عليه السلام. He said: ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb sent his worker to Qudāma with a measure that is not permissible to any one of the clients but that he is killed. He said: The messenger came, and with Qudāma there was a man from the clients of al-Azd, a spy (?, reading jassās instead of jaṣṣāṣ, which means a preparer of gypsum). So he went in front of him and struck his neck (beheaded him).

Abū Saʿīd ʿAbbād from Safīr al-Ḥarīrī from ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Sālim al-Ashall. He said: I asked ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmar about some ḥadīths, and he refused to narrate to me. I said to him: How much was the measure which ʿUmar sent?

He said: It was five handbreadths, sealed with lead, in which two men were killed.

ʿAbbād Abū Saʿīd from ʿAmr b. Thābit from Abū Isḥāq from Saʿīd b. Jubayr from Ibn ʿAbbās. He said: Abū Bakr ordered Khālid b. al-Walīd, saying: When I given salām, strike the neck of ʿAlī.

He said: And it appeared (seemly) to Abū Bakr so he said salām (quietly) to himself, then he called out: O Khālid, do not do what I ordered you to do.

So ʿAlī عليه السلام turned towards Khālid, may God curse him, and said: O Khālid, would you have done it?

He said: Yes, by God.

He said: You are narrower in disposition than that.

ʿAbbād from al-Husain thus, Zayd b. ʿAlī from Yaḥyā b. ʿAbdullah b. al-Ḥusayn from Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad. He said: The Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وآله sent Abū Bakr with (sūra) Barā’a. Then Gabriel عليه السلام came to him and said: O Muḥammad, none can convey it for you save yourself or someone who is from you.

He said: Then the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وآله sent ʿAlī to Abū Bakr and ordered him to hand over Barā’a to him.

He said: ʿAlī عليه السلام caught up to him (?), and with him were ʿAmr, Abū ʿUbayda b. al-Jarrāḥ and Sālim, the client of Hudhayfa.

They said to him: Do not hand it over to him.

Abū Bakr refused and he handed it over to him.

He said: And the group convened over a writing which they have written among themselves in the Inviolable Masjid, that if the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وآله has passed away that they will not entrust ʿAli with anything from it.

When Abū Bakr was enshrouded (i.e. upon his death), ʿAlī عليه السلام entered upon him. He said: There is no one I would prefer to meet God with the like of a ṣaḥīfa than this enshrouded one.

He said: So when ʿUmar was enshrouded, he supplicated (?) for him and said the like of that.

He said: It is the ṣaḥīfa which they wrote among themselves that should Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وآله was pass away that entrust ʿAlī عليه السلام.

ʿAbbād Abū Saʿīd from al-ʿAzramī from Thuwayr b. Yazīd from Khālid b. Maʿdan from Juwayr b. Nuʿayr al-Ḥaḍramī. He said: The Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وآله said: God has cursed and the angels have cursed the man who acts like a woman, and the woman who acts like a man, and the man who practises celibacy – there is no celibacy after John son of Zechariah – and the man who sits on the road, pretending to be a wayfarer.

ʿAbbād from Ibn al-ʿAraz from Thuwayr b. Yazīd from Khālid b. Maʿdān from Juwayr b. Nuʿayr. He said: The Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وآله said: For every house there is a door and the door to the grave is in front of the two feet.

ʿAbbād Abū Saʿīd from Hammad b. ʿIsa al-ʿAbasi from Bilāl b. Yaḥyā from Ḥudhayfa b. al-Yamān. He said: The Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وآله said: When you see Muʿāwiya b. Abī Sufyān on the podium, then strike him with the sword. And when you see al-Ḥakam b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ, even if he is under the covers of the Kaʿba, then kill him.

He said: And the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وآله exiled him to al-Dahlak, a land from the lands of Ethiopia.

He said: When Abū Bakr came to power, they spoke to him regarding him.

He said: He refused to admit him.

He said: When ʿUmar came to power, they spoke to him regarding him. He said: The Messenger of God صلى الله عليه وآله and Abū Bakr exiled him, so shall I admit him?

So he did not admit him. When ʿUthmān came to power, he said: ʿAmr is an elder of the Muslims.

He said: So he admitted him and rewarded him with a hundred thousand dirhams from the public treasury of the Muslims.
