Dr. Sandy Lim with Dr. Soon Lay Ki from Monash University
Students who attended the Guest Lecture
In conjunction with the physical visit to TAR UMT from our external examiner, Dr. Soon Lay Ki from Monash University, on 23 September 2022, we have invited her to give a guest lecture entitled “Text Mining for Decision Making”.
Text mining or text analytics is an artificial intelligence technology that uses natural language processing (NLP) to transform unstructured texts into normalized, structured data suitable for analysis and decision-making. The unstructured texts include news articles, essays, conversations, and social media posts. Such texts are made available in humongous volumes and updated at a speed that is hard for human users to read and digest in time. In order to facilitate timely decision-making, text mining or NLP tools have been developed to extract essential and new insights in the most automated possible manner.
The speaker has shared some of her work in different domains that aim to facilitate timely and effective decision-making by using the information extracted from the texts. Domain adaptation of the existing state-of-the-art techniques has been applied to obtain better results.
