Shutting out the Sky
We will read Shutting Out the Sky by Deborah Hopkinson and a series of related literary and informational texts to explore the question: Why is it important to maintain cultural identity in honor of our ancestors when melding into a new community? We will express our understanding through an argumentative essay. We will explore the sacrifices immigrants made in order to chase the American dream.
Culminating Writing Task:
Was the American dream worth the sacrifice?
This response should be written from the first person point of view as an immigrant coming to America in search of the American dream. In an extended response, write an essay of your opinion on whether or not coming to America in search of the American dream was worth the sacrifices involved.
