With support from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD Center on Global Justice, and the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), a symposium to celebrate the retirement of Prof. Veerabhadran "Ram" Ramanathan will occur on the Scripps campus, with a focus on the synergy of Earth system sciences and climate action on adaptation and mitigation.
Organizing team:
Yangyang Xu (Texas A&M University), Jen Burney (Stanford University), Kristina Pistone (NASA Ames/BAERI), Yan Feng (DOE ANL)
The symposium for Dr. Ramanathan presents a unique opportunity to advance discussions on climate science, policy, and solutions. As a pioneering researcher in atmospheric science and climate mitigation, Dr. Ramanathan’s insights on short-lived climate pollutants and their role in global warming have shaped international policies. This event will foster interdisciplinary collaboration, inspire students and researchers, and translate scientific knowledge into actionable strategies. By bringing together experts from diverse fields, the symposium will emphasize the urgency of climate action while aligning with institutional sustainability goals. It will also serve as a platform to engage policymakers, scientists, and the public in meaningful dialogue.
The symposium will attract a diverse audience, including scientists who have worked with Prof. Ramanathan before, to engage in critical discussions on climate change and sustainability. Researchers in atmospheric sciences and environmental policy will benefit from speakers' insights on climate mitigation. Students and young professionals will gain exposure to cutting-edge research and networking opportunities. By bringing together these stakeholders, the event will foster interdisciplinary collaboration, inspire innovative solutions, and drive meaningful progress toward climate resilience.
The program will include keynote addresses from distinguished guests as well as Dr. Ramanathan.
On Day 1 afternoon, a panel discussion with interdisciplinary experts will be jointly hosted by NASEM as the annual lecture of the Ramanathan Climate Conversation on Climate Resilience and will be live-streamed to the public.
Other sessions will include:
--> Poster and oral presentation sessions.
--> Q&A and networking opportunities.
