The Role of Student Organizations
Student organizations are an essential part of campus life at Texas A&M University. They create opportunities for students to develop leadership skills, establish professional connections, and foster a stronger sense of belonging within their academic communities. Through involvement in student organizations, members can strengthen teamwork and communication abilities while exploring career paths and creating lasting relationships/connections that enhance their college experience. By promoting active participation, student organizations can help shape well-rounded graduates who are better and more prepared to enter their chosen work fields with knowledge, experience, and confidence.
About the Biomedical Sciences Association (BSA)
For Biomedical Sciences (BIMS) students, the Biomedical Sciences Association (BSA) provides resources, mentorship, and events that help members prepare for graduate and professional school. The organization connects students with peers who share similar career goals and interests in healthcare and science, as well as faculty and alumni who may already be in the workforce. BSA serves as a cornerstone of student involvement, and through workshops, service projects, and social gatherings, BSA fosters a close-knit community that enhances the academic and professional success of BIMS students.
The Problem: Retention and Engagement
Despite strong membership numbers, BSA faces the ongoing challenge of keeping members consistently active throughout the academic year. Many students join with enthusiasm, but they gradually disengage as other educational and personal priorities arise. This decline in engagement can limit the organization’s impact and reduce members’ access to professional development and mentorship opportunities. It is essential to address the issue not only for sustaining BSA’s vitality but also for ensuring that members can fully benefit from the resources and support that the organization offers.
Our Research Aim
This project will investigate what factors influence BSA’s member retention and satisfaction. Specifically, our research aims to explore what motivates students to continue to be active members in BSA and what barriers contribute to any disengagement over the course of the semester. By combining member surveys, officer interviews, and meeting observations, the team will identify trends in engagement and potential barriers to continued participation. These methods will provide our group with both quantitative and qualitative insights into student experiences and their perceptions, allowing us to identify any recurring themes.
The Goal
The findings will be used to develop realistic, evidence-based strategies that help BSA improve member retention and enhance the overall experience for biomedical sciences students. If we are able to understand what BSA members value the most, and what factors could lead to their decreased participation, we can help BSA’s leadership refine event planning, improve communication, and strengthen outreach efforts. The recommendations we produce will be based on collected data and then tailored to the organization’s structure, ensuring that they are practical and sustainable for the future of the organization. In doing so, we aim to strengthen BSA’s overall impact while creating a more connected, supportive environment for Biomedical Sciences students.
