Life-changing professional experience for your rising student (received 6/2/22)

Two chances for hands-on research for your rising science student

Did you have an exceptional science student this past semester who could benefit from an immersive, hands-on research program outside of the classroom? Headwaters is now accepting early sign-ups for our Fall Research Experience, but it's also not too late to sign up for the summer semester for students still trying to fill their summer education plans!

The Headwaters Research Experience allows high school students to practice hands-on research outside of the classroom by creating their own research project while working hand-in-hand with a professional scientist from prestigious institutions such as UC Davis and Berkeley.

A handful of our past Research Experience students have been published in academic journals, are headed to Ivy League schools or even already in college at 14 years old! This immersive program is available to high school students across the country and allows students to study what they're really interested in.

Help your students get a leg up with those college recruiters and turn their excitement for science into professional experience that has the potential to be life changing.

Headwaters also has two, week-long overnight summer camps for high school and middle school students looking to experience the beauty of the Truckee-Tahoe area while incorporating scientific inquiry into the natural world.

Our Girls Science Camp is a week of science and camping at the Truckee Donner Land Trust’s Webber Lake Campground. Our Environmental Science Research Camp at the same location is for all students.

Camp participants are given the chance to practice science just like a professional would, analyzing data and finally creating a research talk. If they would like to continue their research, they can also join our Summer Research Experience and submit their paper for publication. They can get all of their data collected for the summer-long program during this week at Webber Lake.

‘This was an amazing learning experience’: Spring field days show value of hands-on science research

It’s been a busy spring of field day programs at Headwaters Science Institute, and we couldn’t be more excited to share with you what our students have been working on.

From erosion research on the banks of the American River in Sacramento to examining the effects of fire on forests near Truckee, we’ve been thrilled to facilitate the ability of hundreds of students to get out of the classroom and into the natural world around them in beautiful Northern California and Lake Tahoe areas.

“I really appreciated being able to fully design our own research – we came up with our own question, method, and process, with guidance from Headwaters Institute teachers,” one student from San Francisco’s Urban High School said of their field day.

Click below to read more about the kinds of impacts our field days can have on students.

A word from one of our dedicated professors

Visiting Assistant Professor of Psychology Deana Vitrano will teach Introduction to Psychology this summer. We caught up with her recently and thought you might enjoy what she said about her experience teaching a Pre-College course: “I have to say it was one of the best experiences I've ever had. The students were wonderful. They showed up every day, they were responsive, they were enthusiastic and ready to learn. They also asked amazing questions. One student in particular had me thinking so much about a question she asked, I actually wrote to the author of our textbook for clarification. It was truly an absolute joy working with the students!”

Summer Pre-College Program

Our 2022 program will be offered virtually and our application is open!

Learn more

Hello Lisa,

I am happy to write with news about Skidmore's 2022 Summer Pre-College Program.

Fast Facts

  • It will run July 5 – Aug. 5.

  • Students can register for one online course of their choice.

  • Lower program rate: approximately $2,805 – $3,740 depending on the course credits (plus a $750 early-bird discount for qualified applicants). Limited scholarship funding is available for eligible students if they apply by April 1.

  • All of the benefits remain the same — college credits, admissions workshops, close access to peers, and mentoring from professors.

Courses

We have an exciting online curriculum for high school students again this summer, including courses in Psychology, Human Genetics, Sociology, Geoscience, and English.

Testimonials

Hear what some of our 2021 scholars said about our program.

"I didn't expect hands-on learning from a virtual college experience, but my Human Genetics professor and the class itself exceeded my expectations. As my first college course, it was initially challenging, but the challenge was part of the experience and I enjoyed it. This prepared me not only for college, but for future science-related courses." – Joseph J.

"The class was very interesting and the professor and teaching assistant were really helpful and supportive throughout the Pre-College session. There was also program support that I knew I could rely on if I needed help." – Yorlandy E.

"I feel better prepared for college thanks to Skidmore's Pre-College Program. I learned how to balance schoolwork with my personal life, avoid procrastination, take organized reading notes, and study effectively." – Jacqueline T.

Do your students have questions?

There are several upcoming opportunities for us to connect.

Summer Pre-College Virtual Fair: Pre-College staff will be available to text or video chat with students, parents, and school staff to answer any questions on two upcoming dates:

  • January 22, 1 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. EST | Click here to register.

  • February 26, 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. EST | Registration coming soon

And as always, students are invited to email us directly.

We hope to see your students online soon and are looking forward to an exciting summer!

All the best,

Michelle Paquette-Deuel, M.A.

Planning for a Summer of Science (received 2/10/22)

Get out those shades. Your summer of science is right around the corner!

It's February, and yes, Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter. But we're all shades and suntan lotion here at Headwaters as we get ready for our summer of science. That's right, registration is open for Headwaters' summer camp and program offerings. From overnight camps in the Tahoe-Truckee mountains to intensive research programs that can be conducted anywhere, we've got something for every level of science-loving student. But don't hesitate; spots are filling up fast. We've also created printable flyers that you can post in your classroom and can be accessed here.

Did you miss our live Q-and-A with

"Intelligent Trees" director Julia Dordel?

We had a great time chatting with Julia Dordel, the talented director of the award-winning documentary "Intelligent Trees," to wrap up our free screening of the movie. Not to worry if you missed it! You can catch the replay on our Facebook page or YouTube channel. Julia provided a lot of insight into the film, its reception and how she became both a scientist and filmmaker!

'I never knew what I skied on

every day was so complex'

Speaking of programs, Tahoe Expedition Academy had two field days last week at the Johnson Canyon trailhead. The first was for 9th- and 10th-grade Biology students and the second was for 11th- and 12th-grade Earth Science Students. The field day was a super condensed research experience, and each student was able to see how snow depth and density is measured and what kinds of water quality metrics can be measured from snow melt. Then students did a mini research project of their own to experience the scientific process. Check out more photos of the field day here, and click below to learn more about our school programs to see what would be a good fit for your class.

Do you follow us?

Make sure you're up to date on all of the goings on at Headwaters by following our social media accounts. You'll get notifications when new episodes of Lunch With A Scientist drop, insights from students' experience with Headwaters, and much more.

Internship Opportunity For Archie Williams High School Students (received 2/1/22)

Dear Ms. White and Ms. Neumaier,

I hope you are doing well!

My name is Marshall Bailly, Executive Director of Leadership Initiatives. Leadership Initiatives is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that partners with outstanding high school students to provide them with hands-on experience that builds their ability to collaborate, communicate, and confidently pursue their futures. Unlike other education programs where simulations are the key component, our students intern with real law firms, business development organizations, security agencies, and hospitals to build their resume and their knowledge. This real-world experience cannot be duplicated with simulations or classroom learning.

Following two years of online-only programs, Leadership Initiatives is excited to announce that our Youth Development Programs will be returning to Georgetown University for the summer of 2022. We will be holding each of our summer programs in-person along with having a virtual option for select programs.

Our Grant Committee has reserved scholarships for California teachers, counselors, coaches, advisors, educators, and affiliates to nominate outstanding students for the Leadership Initiatives Youth Development Programs. Students nominated by Archie Williams High School educators will receive the $1,000 scholarship to put towards the Youth Development Program of their choice and priority consideration. We will contact the student directly with more information and an invitation to apply. Attached below is an informational packet that you can share with students and educators from Archie Williams High School.

If you would like to set up an informational call to learn more about the programs, you can schedule a call here. Our 2021 Student Nomination Form is located here; more information about Leadership Initiatives can be found at our website www.LIChangeSummer.org. All nomination emails have a 24-hour turnaround time from when a student is nominated.

Participants of our Youth Development Programs will have access to our unparalleled mentorship opportunities with leaders from Exxon, NASA, the US Pentagon, the National Institutes of Health, Homeland Security, the World Bank, and more. Interns also receive one-on-one college application assistance from top admissions experts at CollegeWise, free SAT/ACT training through TestRocker, college application training, and unlimited essay editing assistance through University Connection, as well as letters of recommendation, resume editing, and scholarship application assistance from our mentors. These benefits remain available for four years to allow for all students to take advantage of them.

We offer reduced-price online options for our summer 2022 Youth Development Programs.

Internship links and detailed explanations are listed below:

  • Advanced Law & Trial Internship (In-Person: July 10th - July 16th, 2022 or July 17th - July 23rd, 2022): Participants intern for a DC law firm to create key case arguments and have their work incorporated into trials and hearings in the fall of 2022. Interns work directly with a client and their legal team to draft legal memoranda and develop case arguments. Law interns are given the unique opportunity to work with the ACLU, D.C. Police Officers, prosecutors, and law professors from Georgetown University Law School. Our 2021 cases involved the Incarceration Reduction Amendment Act (IRAA) and direct collaboration with national organizations like the Second Look Project, The DC Justice Lab, and the Justice Project. 2022 cases will be announced later this spring. Click here to watch our program video.

  • International Leadership & Business Internship (In-Person: July 10th - July 16th, 2022): Participants choose an entrepreneur from the developing world to partner with and develop plans to make their start-up business a reality. Interns learn how to skillfully build a business while simultaneously calculating risk – the essentials of constructing a successful enterprise. Participants work closely with Georgetown University professors and business professionals to write business plans, develop research skills, as well as learn teamwork, proper oral presentation techniques, and critical communication skills. These experts lead a series of skills-development workshops to help students create a business plan. At the end of the week, interns allocate seed money to implement their business plans in the fall of 2022. Interns will also attend exclusive tours of the Nigerian, Swedish, Chinese, Israeli, French and Iraqi embassies; each tour will have special questions and answer sessions from the leading embassy officials. Click here to watch our program video.

  • Advanced Medical & Public Health Internship (In-Person: July 17th - July 23rd, 2022, July 24th - July 30th, 2022, or July 31st - August 6th, 2022; Virtual: August 1st - August 12th, 2022): Participants learn about the four major diseases facing the developing world from doctors and medical professionals from Georgetown University. This knowledge will help interns diagnose a patient in real-time using Oculus-Rift VR technology. Medical interns also develop public health campaigns to raise awareness and provide prevention methods to communities in need. These public health campaigns will be used throughout Bauchi, Nigeria, to improve the understanding of preventable diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, interns travel to Howard University Simulation Center and have the rare opportunity to perform an upper endoscopy, an abdominal ultrasound, and learn how to draw blood using state-of-the-art simulation units. Finally, interns partner with a cadre of experts in surgery, medical research, emergency room medicine, and physical therapy to learn about future medical careers. Click here to watch our program video.

  • Advanced Medical Neuroscience Internship (In-Person: July 10th - July 16th, 2022; Virtual: June 13th - June 24th, 2022): Participants intern for world-renowned neuroscientist and chief of Georgetown University's neuroethics program, Dr. James Giordano. Over the course of seven days, interns participate in cutting-edge neuroscience experiments that explore the biological foundations of the brain, progressing from the cellular foundations of the neuron to an understanding of the sensory systems, and culminating with higher-order cognitive functions such as memory, emotion, and morality. As a final project, interns design and propose an experiment related to cognitive neuroscience and neuroethics in order to focus and apply their understanding. Participants present these proposed experiments to leading neuroscientists, with the winning team writing a paper to be published on their theories. Click here to watch our program video.

  • National Security & Intelligence Internship (In-Person: July 17th - July 23rd, 2022): Participants in this accelerated security training program work directly with national security experts, learn about the latest intelligence and military strategies, and implement these strategies to save lives. Interns meet one-on-one with representatives from all branches of the military, federal agencies, military academies, and private companies to learn about the education and career opportunities available to them in the fields of security and intelligence. Representatives in 2021 included the National Security Agency, CIA, FBI, Secret Service, West Point, the U.S. Department of State, Navy Seals, and the U.S. Air Force Academy. As a final project, interns work in teams to implement what they have learned throughout the program to design and propose a security plan for Yobe State University Security Department. Their solutions will protect major areas and institutions within Yobe State, Nigeria, from terrorist groups like Boko Haram.

Leadership Initiatives has successfully run summer development programs at Georgetown, Harvard, UCLA, Stanford, The University of Chicago, and Emory. We are happy to connect you with past students, parents, business partners, and board members as references on our past work, and the impact it can have on assisting students to achieve their university and career goals.

To ensure all students can attend, we offer additional assistance for families with financial needs and have a $500,000 endowment for zero-interest payment plans for up to 12 months.

We were truly impressed by all the students nominated by California educators last year. We hope to have the opportunity to transform more lives with phenomenal students this upcoming summer. You can email or call me at (202) 738-1115 anytime to discuss the Youth Development Programs.

I cannot wait to transform lives with your students next summer,

Marshall

Interior Design Summer Workshop ( received 1/31/22)

Dear Educator:

For the past twelve years Ball State’s Interior Design program has offered a high school Youth Interior Design Forum. This is a workshop experience where high school students of all levels learn about interior design in a hands-on way. The workshop explores fundamentals of 2D and 3D concepts, basic drawing and illustration skills, use of color and light effects, and how interior environments affect human behavior. At the end of the workshop, students have new friends, new perspectives, and a personal portfolio full of ideas!

This year, once again, we will be offering a ten day on-campus workshop during the summer and two online workshops during the summer for high school students who have an interest in studying interior design at the college level. Registration for the summer Youth Interior Design Forum is open now.

About 80 percent of college students in the United States end up changing their major at least once, according to the National Center for Education Statistics Participation in this workshop will help your child build an art portfolio, help them make their final decision about declaring “interior design” as a major and also help them with a smooth transition to college after this exciting campus experience. Further, we will waive a required elective course for them, if they participate in the workshop and get admitted to Ball State University to study Interior Design.

For more information and registration please see the attached flyer and visit our website at www.bsu.edu/designforum.

Please also feel free to call 765.285.1471 or e-mail at rahmadi@bsu.edu., if you have any questions.

Best Regards,
