Sophomores
HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR SOPHOMORE YEAR
College and Career Center:
Attend college admission representative visits that occur on our campus each fall. They are a great way to learn more about schools from all across the country. The visits are posted on Naviance under college visits and on the Events page.
Naviance:
Naviance is a powerful online tool for students to research colleges, careers and scholarships. Play around in Naviance to become familiar with it. A good place to start is to complete the grade-level tasks assigned by the Counseling Department.
Career Exploration:
Start to think about what interests you, which occupations meet those interests, and what education is required.
College of Marin:
COM is pleased to offer the Jumpstart program to eligible high school students. Get the experience and benefits of taking college-level courses, and COM will cover the enrollment fees for up to 11 units. The Jumpstart program is an opportunity to:
earn transferable college credit;
complete a baccalaureate degree early by enrolling in classes that transfer to universities and colleges; and
accelerate and enrich your educational journey
Talk to your high school counselor to get more information
Testing:
Although most colleges are now either test-optional (meaning each applicant gets to choose whether or not to submit their ACT or SAT scores and submitting test scores is not a requirement for admissions) or test-blind (whether or not a student decides to send their test scores, they won't be considered as part of the admission evaluation), these policies may change in the future. To keep our families up-to-date on this topic, each year we host this annual event:
Navigating College Admission Tests
While the shifting test policy landscape now gives students greater discretion over important testing decisions, some questions may persist regarding the value of scores and who may benefit most from taking these exams. With that in mind, we were pleased to once again host our Annual College Admission Testing Night on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. Here is a link to the recording from that presentation: www.compassprep.com/schools/tamalpais-union-district/
