THS Tribune visited Sophomore Talawanda Golf player, Mason Merz, and asked him some questions about the season and sport.
How’s the season going?
Mason: It was good, we went 9 and 2 this year, very successful, we’re a very young team with a bright future ahead of us.
How’s your individual performance?
Mason: It’s been alright, definitely could’ve been better. I’ve improved though. I dropped my average to a 42.5.
What’s your favorite course?
Mason: I really like shaker run, great condition, neat holes, it was in the middle of a neighborhood which made it a fun challenge.
Mark Twain said “Golf is a good walk spoiled”, what’s your opinion on that?
Mason: It's a rejuvenating walk with a golf swing every once in a while.
What are some goals the team has for this season?
Mason: We wanted to improve on our mental game throughout the season so that we don’t let the little things bother us, putting us in a position to score well.
How long have you golfed for?
Mason: I’ve golfed my whole life but got serious in 6th or 7th grade when we started our middle school golf team.
Who’s your biggest golfing inspiration?
Mason: My grandpa, he played college golf at Morehead university, he’s always played a lot and he really helped develop my game.
Do you golf for the love of the game or for the money and fame?
Mason: I golf for the love of the game. I've always enjoyed playing it, it’s a great way to relax and hang out with my friends after school and get outside.
What or who got you into golf?
Mason: My grandpa and my dad got me into it, they’re both very helpful and willing to go out and play with me.
What’s your favorite golf club?
Mason: Definitely my driver because the feeling you get when you hit it well is unmatched.
