Educational Programs and Operations Levy

Proposition 1: Four-year replacement Educational Programs and Operations Levy

The EP&O replaces the levy that expires in 2020. It would continue to pay for programs, people, and supplies not funded or underfunded by state basic education money. Levy funds are controlled by the school district to support a full range of education programs and activities for students. The levy would cost property owners $2 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, which is an increase of 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation. The owner of a home valued at $500,000 would pay an estimated $1,000 a year, which is an increase of $250 over the current levy. Here is what would be collected each year if the levy is approved:

Collection year Rate per $1,000 Total collection

2021 $2.00 $16,419,347

2022 $2.00 $17,895,669

2023 $2.00 $19,504,860

2024 $2.00 $21,258,878

Technology Levy

Proposition 2: The four-year Technology Levy pays for equipment, software, infrastructure, training and support staff.

State basic education funding provides very little support for classroom technology. Failure of the 2018 Technology Levy eliminated most funding for classroom technology. The school district reduced staffing for technology support and training, halted purchases of replacement computers, software and infrastructure, and used reserve funds to maintain existing classroom technology.

The levy will provide funding for Tahoma's technology plan, created by a committee of parents, community members, staff & students. It guides how learning is improved through the use of classroom technology. The levy will pay for replacement of outdated computers and software, improvements to infrastructure, and hiring support staff.

The levy would collect $3.9 million the first year and $4.3 million in the next three years. The tax rate would begin at 47 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation and drop to 40 cents the final year. The owner of a home valued at $500,000 would pay an estimated $235 the first year and $200 the final year. For more about property taxes, please see this page: How does this affect my taxes?
