Choosing the Right College Is a High‑Impact Decision
Choosing a college, and a major, is one of the most consequential decisions you’ll make. It affects your career, finances, and personal growth long after graduation.
When your college choice genuinely matches who you are and how you learn, your chances of long‑term success increase dramatically, regardless of major or career path. The goal isn’t just getting in. It’s setting yourself up to thrive once you arrive.
When Guidance Counseling Isn’t Enough
High school guidance counselors do important work, but they’re often stretched thin, focused on admissions logistics, and limited in the perspective they can offer.
Sometimes, you need:
-A broader viewpoint
-Honest, experience‑based insight
-Advice from someone who understands life inside college, not just the application process
That’s where I come in.
An Insider Perspective—Without the Institutional Agenda
I’m a longtime college professor with over 25 years of experience teaching, advising, and observing what actually helps students succeed.
I’ve spent thousands of hours on college campuses working directly with students, seeing what works, what doesn’t, and why capable, motivated students sometimes struggle anyway.
My role is simple:
Help you make an informed college decision, and arrive prepared to succeed once you get there.
What I Don’t Do
To be clear, I am not:
-A replacement for your guidance counselor
-An academic tutor
-An advocate who contacts professors or administrators on your behalf
-A campus advisor helping you register for classes or track degree requirements
Those roles belong to your school.
What I Do
I serve as an independent, outside consultant, someone not affiliated with your institution, who helps you:
-Gain clarity about your options
-Ask better questions during campus visits
-Avoid common (and costly) college missteps
-Build the skills needed to succeed beyond the classroom
I can’t guarantee outcomes, but I can help you improve your odds by ensuring you’re informed, prepared, and confident in your decisions.
How My Services Work
Two‑Phase, À La Carte Consulting
You choose the level of support you need. Services are customized and billed accordingly, typically during the summer months when there’s time to plan without school‑year pressure.
Phase 1: “Where Can I Go?”
Best for: Students before or after sophomore or junior year, prior to college visits
This phase focuses on identifying colleges that are a genuine fit, and helping you get real answers from campuses, not just marketing messages.
We’ll explore:
-Your academic strengths and challenges
-Your interests, values, and long‑term goals
-What kind of environment suits you best (small vs. large, public vs. private)
-Majors that align with your goals and offer strong post‑graduation outcomes
-How to ask the right questions during campus visits, and who to ask beyond admissions
The goal: look past brochures and rankings to understand what schools truly offer, and whether they’re right for you.
Phase 2: “I Know Where I’m Going—Now What?”
Begins: After you’ve chosen a college, typically the summer before freshman year
Many students struggle not because they lack intelligence or motivation, but because they arrive without the foundational skills college success requires.
We focus on essential “college‑level” skills, including:
-Time management and effective study habits
-Self‑advocacy and communication
-Navigating campus resources
-Building professional relationships
-Managing expectations and independence
From experience, these skills are rarely taught appropriately in high schools, even to the strongest of students.
The goal is to arrive prepared, so you’re not learning these lessons the hard way once classes begin. Success in college should leave room for academic achievement, professional growth, and a fulfilling social life. I help you do all of this, efficiently.
Transfer Students: “What Do I Do Now?”
Transfer students face unique challenges. Over my career, I’ve helped transfer students navigate:
-Maximizing transfer credit
-Academic and cultural transitions
-Setting themselves up for success at their new institution
Services for transfer students are fully customized based on individual needs.
