Since Sylvania Schools has adopted the Google for Education platform that drives Chromebooks, we are asking that teachers, administrators, and students use Google Hangouts Meet for videoconferencing purposes. This tool is simple to use, and it is integrated into the Google accounts all teachers, administrators, and students have. Here are helpful resources for use.
Videoconferencing environments must be treated as live classrooms. Responsible behavior that treats others with respect and kindness during the meeting is required both through simple moral behavior and school policy. Refer to Sylvania Schools' guide for Remote Learning: Ethical Use of School Technology.
Google Hangouts Meet is a videoconferencing tool that enables users to meet with up to 250 participants in a digital environment with audio/video support. Teacher and students on Chromebooks can use the onboard camera and microphone to participate in a Meet. Those on other devices must make sure they have a working camera and microphone for full access. This utility is also accessible through tablets and smartphones through the Meets app on Android and iPhone.
Google Hangouts Meet is a paid service, but Sylvania Schools has access through its partnership with Google for Education. All users must log into a Meet using their Sylvania Schools account. If you are unable to join a Meet, make sure you are using a Sylvania Schools account.
If you intend to use Meet for live video conferencing with students, we ask that you inform your parents. We will not require a permission form, but we will allow that any student may opt-out with no learning or grade impact. This means that you should make the content of a video conference available to students not in the Meet. This can be done by recording and posting in Google Classroom or summarizing the discussion.
If you're starting a Meet, set it up in a Google Calendar event, share the link in an email, or post it on Classroom. If you're attending someone else's Meet, join from the link in that event.
Allow your camera and microphone to be accessed, if asked. Click "Join now."
Join the conversation, using the mute if needed to silence yourself for the discussion.
Plenty of resources exist to help you start Meets. Check out the quick start guide to the right (You can pop it out into its own window to read it more easily, if you'd like). See the links for the app download below. Watch a video, too!
