Young Leaders

Who are Young Leaders?

Young Leaders are young people aged between 14 and 18 who step up and help our younger Scouts as part of a leadership team. The Young Leaders' Scheme is just one of the exciting programme elements that makes up the Explorer Scout section.

Explorer Scout Young Leaders volunteer alongside adult leaders in a Beaver Colony, Cub Pack or Scout Troop. They're a valuable asset to any leadership team and play an active role in the section, bringing a range of fresh ideas and acting as positive role models for the young people they work alongside.

All Young Leaders in the Beaver, Cub and Scout section who are between the ages of 14 and 18 must be members of a Young Leader Unit.

The Scouts website has more details on the scheme which can be found here - Explorer Scout Young Leaders' Scheme | Scouts.

As well as developing valuable life skills, the scheme is an opportunity for Explorers to make a positive impact in their communities and to fulfil the service elements of many of the top awards in Scouts, or their Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Recognition of achievement is available along the way, and on completion of the scheme, the Young Leader is awarded an Explorer Scout Young Leader belt buckle.

The Leader of the Young Leader Unit in our district is Bernice Benfold. If any Explorers are interested in becoming a Young Leader then contact her directly. Just ask one of the leaders for her email address.

What's Happening?

Well Done!

Congratulations to 5 of our Young Leaders who have had confirmation that they've passed their BTEC Diploma Level 2 in Teamwork and Personal Development in the Community. They now have an externally recognised formal qualification that recognises all of their skills and achievements gained as Explorers and Young Leaders. Useful for their UCAS application form, CV and future interviews!

Our Green Young Leaders

Wow! 10 of our district's Young Leaders have secured a place on the Green Young Leaders weekend at Gilwell Park in January. This is great news for our Beavers and Cubs as the Young Leaders will lead them through the Green Champions programme where they will learn about either Birds, Bugs and Bees, Growing Green or Plastic Pollution. With COP26 fast approaching, our Young People will be doing their bit for our fragile planet.

Congratulations

Ten of our new Explorer Young Leaders completed compulsory Module A at our first YL training session this year, making them officially 'Young Leaders'! They are a fantastic and fun group of young people who will bring so much to their volunteering units across our district. Well done everyone!

Earlier this year 5 of our senior Young Leaders took the opportunity to gain an external formal qualification that recognised all of their skills and achievements gained as Explorers and Young Leaders. The BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Teamwork and Personal Development in the Community was delivered by CVQO, a UK education charity which provides vocational qualifications to youth group members. This group of Young Leaders were the first Explorers in the UK to complete this qualification with CVQO! Their places were funded by a government grant and we now wait to see if they all passed!
