ANNOUNCEMENTS

Update from Dr. Cooke

Titans:

Thank you to all that attended our last Coffee with the Principal. I appreciate the questions and concerns that you brought to my attention. Here are some of the highlights and answers I was able to find.

  1. Discount for Internet Services. I contacted ATT and Cox providers. ATT offers some flexibility and discounts. You need to call 800-288-2020. You can call Cox at 1-888-713-1872. It is probably best that our parents contact the internet providers personally to bring to their attention the extra costs that have been incurred due to the pandemic and the need for more internet/data usage for the family. I believe they can explore on a case by case situation discounts for your family.

  2. Off-season Conditioning. We are working with our district for a conditioning plan to return to the school site. We will be prepared. Our coaches will receive training for monitoring students. And there will be certain restrictions about students to coaches ratio. Safety will be the number one concern. We will review expectations for VAPA, Band and Color Guard as well.

  3. AP Testing. Please see the WAAG for the section on AP testing and updates. It is critical that you are aware of deadlines.

  4. Technology Issues. Please be aware that starting next week, James Dow (our IT) will be able to support students directly with support before school as well as possibly switching out some of our students who prefer a laptop over the Ipad they were issued. Again, see the WAAG this Sunday.

  5. Teacher Changes. For some of our classes, the teacher of record was offered a different job in our district. It has been a scramble to find coverage for all of the classes. We were able to hire several teachers and are in the process of interviewing for the CTE Health Care and Medical Assistant Course. Please be patient as we sort this out. We will do our best to also create opportunities for support groups and tutoring to help fill in any learning gaps.

We are here to serve and support. I appreciate everyone's flexibility and please do not hesitate to contact our APs, counselors and teachers for additional support. Please let us know if you have any questions. Also, please note that this Friday the 23rd, many of our teachers will be in professional development workshops. If they are not present, there will by assigned work for the students to complete asynchronously. Teachers will communicate this week about their class situation.

Thank you. Stay safe and stay Titan Strong. Don't forget to look into the clubs available so that students can find connections during this time!

We do have tutoring opportunities available. Please see the message below about college students supporting the tutoring process.

It is always a pleasure to connect with our Titan Community. I know distance learning has presented its challenges, but I am proud of our students, parents and teachers for their commitment and resiliency to teaching and learning. We are all on Team Titan. As always, please reach out to me at ricardo.cooke@sweetwaterschools.org with any concerns, questions and/or comments. If it is a question about the classroom, please contact your teacher first. Our teachers are amazing and will work with you in a positive and constructive manner. Stay Safe and Stay Titan Strong.

I also want to take this time to recognize Joey Colarusso and Brayden Wong for being National Merit Scholarship Semi-finalists. What a tremendous honor!! Way to represent Eastlake High School. We are so proud of you!

In Service,

Dr. Cooke

How to excuse absences due to technical issues:

Students and parents/guardians, moving forward please use the google form listed in this attachment to excuse any absence related to technical issues. Note that a screenshot is still required to excuse these absences and it must be taken/submitted at the time of the issue, show the date and time in the screenshot, and the issue/problem occurring.

Please click the link below and bookmark it so you have access to the google form if a tech issue occurs. (Information on taking screenshots and tech issues in relation to absences was sent through Jupiter to all students, parents, and guardians prior on 8/20 and 9/2. It is everyone's responsibility to read all messages.) This google form only applies to tech issues as you no longer will send the screenshots to the teacher but will upload to the form instead.

This document also has information on contact IT for support. Note all absences may take up to five business days to process and we thank you for your patience and understanding.

For all other absences:

1. If you were marked absent in a class and think you should be marked present- contact the teacher directly (not the attendance office). Teachers will fill out change of attendance forms if there was an error.

2. To excuse appointments or illness contact the attendance office directly.

3. To request an independent study contract (3 day notice required) contact Amanda Stroberg.

Friendly reminder per the info sent out via Jupiter and posted on the web, we don't use typed emails to excuse. Kindly call 397-3810 or you can attach a handwritten note and email it to be printed with the needed information to elh.attendance@sweetwaterschools.org:

  1. Student Name/ ID

  2. Date of Birth

  3. Date of Absence

  4. Reason for Absence

  5. Parent/ Guardian Name

  6. Parent/ Guardian phone number (on file)

  7. Parent/ Guardian signature

Daily Attendance FYI

Excusing / coding attendance is the same as if we were in person at school

Students cannot excuse themselves and students must talk to teachers for single period absence corrections. They also need to send documentation of tech issues to teacher during that class. Click HERE for detailed graph.

Virtual Vet Walk

Please check out this Notice re changes to the “Veteran Walk” this year. Although it has been a trying year for all of us, we don’t want to skip this event after 18 years, ‘just because’ it would be the easy thing to do. In fact, forgetting about our Senior Home Veterans, particularly this year when they are restricted and without visitors, would be the worst thing we could do. Please take videos/pictures of your special Walk and send them to vfwpost2111.org. We will show them on our web-site and at the Veterans Home. Let’s show them through our videos, participation and donations that we will always honor them at Christmas, no matter what troubles the world give sus. Please contact me about your family, Post or corporate ‘2020 Veteran Walk Plans’ and we will list them on the VFW Post 2111 web-site.

Many thanks for all you have done over the years for our Senior Home Veterans!

#VoteSaferSD PSA Project

High school and college students with an interest in art and graphic design are invited to participate in the San Diego County Registrar of Voter’s #VoteSaferSD PSA Project. The goal of this project is to encourage students to create and submit digital PSAs (public service announcements) that will inform the public on how to vote safer in the Nov. 3 Presidential General Election.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has changed the landscape of the upcoming election and the Registrar must effectively communicate these changes to the public. Student designs should convey information quickly and efficiently.

This project offers students a unique opportunity to have their work professionally published and featured through the San Diego County Registrar of Voters and County of San Diego websites and social media channels.
