Notes from the Editor

Dear Readers,

2021 has not only been a momentous year for space programs and initiatives so far, it has also highlighted the notable contributions of brilliant women towards these missions. It began with the fantastic triumph of NASA's Perseverance rover landing on Mars, earlier this year. The news of the successful landing was delivered by Swati Mohan, who is the guidance and operations lead for the mission. The small yet tenacious Ingenuity helicopter, that hitched a ride on the underside of Perseverance, was led by MiMi Aung, and named by an 11th grader girl, Vaneeza Rupani! Also, more recently, the historic civilian flights of Unity22 (Virgin Galactic) and New Shepherd (Blue Origin) collectively included 3 women! Despite facing many adversities and rejections since the Space programs began, women have displayed exemplary resilience and pursued their dreams. This special edition of the newsletter is dedicated to these women, who worked hard to get there, and paved way for all those who came after, to get into Aerospace and related fields. Although there's a long way to go, it is heartening to see women from various walks of life, get opportunities to be a part of these missions.

We have interesting articles contributed by our SWE members. July and August have been a busy time for us at SWE. Registration has opened up for the first Vine & Verse book club session organized by the Professional Development team, the Outreach team has put together a fun IDEAS lab activity on gravity and roller coasters, we've recapped events in July and more. There's a lot in this edition, and we hope you enjoy the content. Here's to looking forward to many such iconic firsts and opportunities to make history!

Cheers,

Preeti Menon

Revolutionary Leadership: Leading Change Through Innovation

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is happy to present Dr. Ken Wilcox’s webinar on “Revolutionary Leadership: Leading Change Through Innovation”.

Building a culture of creativity and spirit of innovation is the goal of many leaders in normal times. However, during times of trial and crisis, a culture of innovation becomes ever more important - with only the strongest and adaptive surviving. Hear from Ken Wilcox how he led the bank through the valley of the post dot-com boom of the 1990s and the 2008 recession, setting the bank on a new trajectory of success!

Speaker Bio: Ken Wilcox currently serves as Emeritus Chairman of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and is the author of Leading through Culture. He was previously the CEO of SVB Financial Group. In that role, he successfully pursued a strategy of expansion and diversification, while remaining focused on the group’s core niches of technology, life sciences, and venture capital. Wilcox earned a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School, as well as a PhD in German studies at Ohio State University.

We're Seeking a Treasurer!

If you have been on the fence about helping to support SWE, then now is your opportunity to consider a leadership position. We are in need of a new Treasurer. Spandana Chava has been our treasurer for many years, and she truly has been a TREASURE to our team. She is ready to train someone to take over her role. Although she needs to focus on her family right now, she is willing to support her replacement, as needed during the transition.

If you would like to talk directly with her about the role, please contact her through the Exec Website. If you'd like more info about specific duties, you can find them here: Section Executive Council Roles - Savannah Coastal Empire (sceswe.org)

Send us an email: sceswe@swe.org and we would be happy to have you on board!

The fiscal year financial report is due July 31st. This is perfect timing for Spandana to teach someone the steps. It doesn't take more than an hour or so to complete, because her process is very streamlined!
