6th grade Science

Mrs. Salmons

Class overview

6th grade science class will include 3 main science strands: Physical Science, Earth Science and Life Science.

In Physical science, students will study atoms, elements, compounds, states of matter, kinetic and potential energy and motion relating to speed.

In Earth science, students will study minerals, rocks, rock cycle and soil along with relating these topics to the state of Ohio.

Finally, in Life science students will study the parts and functions of animal and plant cells along with the organization of living systems.

I love to incorporate many different kinds of hands-on activities so that students can examine and explore science right in front of them. Much of the students work will be completed in class; however, there may be opportunities for students to extend their scientific thinking while at home.

I encourage students to come to class excited about learning science and to ask questions. If I am unable to answer one of their questions, then I will do my best to seek out and find it.

Below are a few pictures from last year showing you some of the cool things you will get to do this year. It's going to be a fun time:)

In Earth Science, students study the soil profile (or soil layers) in the ground. This image of the soil profile is editable! Doesn't it look delicious?

Asma is making observations on which clear liquid (water, vinegar or 7-Up) dissolves the jolly rancher at the fastest rate. Do you have an educated guess on which liquid wins?

Students study the density in solids, liquids and gases. This image is showing how a variety of liquids represent different densities. Can you see how the liquids create layers?

This is a picture of my 6th graders last year from Holt Crossing Intermediate where I taught for last 19 years. These students were absolutely a wonderful group of young people. They showed kindness and compassion towards their teachers and other classmates at HCI. They will be missed.

I would love replace this image with a group of all of you so that I may have a memorable picture of my first class of 6th graders from Park Street Intermediate, my new home!

About me and my family

This is a picture of my husband, Chuck, my beautiful Irish Setter, Ruby, and myself. Chuck and I have been married for almost 15 years. Ruby joined our family in 2018. She is now 3 years old. Chuck works for the Ohio Geological Survey for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources as Communications Supervisor. He also writes poetry in his spare time.

We enjoy traveling and exploring new places, hiking, walking, watching soccer and making our own homemade pizzas.

I have been teaching for 26 years and have always taught for South-Western City Schools. I graduated from Westland HS in 1989 and attended Bowling Green State University where I received my teaching degree in 1993.

I have spent the majority of my career teaching 6th grade math and science at Holt Crossing Intermediate. Over the past few years, I have developed a passion for teaching science; and now I have the best opportunity of being your 6th grade science teacher here at Park Street Intermediate.

I am super excited to be here at PSI with all of you. It is going to be an excellent year of learning. I can't wait to begin our adventure together.

Go Wolves!
