Teachers are then able to analyze the results and determine which level students are currently reading at and whether this is at, below, or above grade level. This level is used to match students up with books that will provide a slight challenge but still allow the text to be comprehended. While selecting books at your child's instructional reading level or a few levels below means that you know your child will be able to understand the text, it is advised by Fountas and Pinnell, reading experts, to avoid discouraging your child from selecting a book above their reading level. If it is of high interest of to your child, we always want to encourage reading and this may be a book that parents can check in with more to make sure students are understanding it. The BAS is more of a teaching tool for educators to understand the next steps in increasing students' reading skills.
