Music & Library

Mid-September:
We're a few weeks in with our music lessons, and thus far we've had the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of beat, rhythm, syncopation, melody, tempo, dynamics, whole/half/quarter/eighth notes...and after all that work, rests! The kindergarten begins lessons this week along with library, so the fun is just getting started!!! Keep an eye (and an ear) out for the next update sometime around mid-October. School has begun =)
Mid-October
Several weeks into our school year and we've already had some hands-on creative expression with egg-shakers, hand drums, boom-whackers, hand drums, and various other percussion instruments to continue in steady beat & rhythm exercises, moving on to body percussion sounds with snaps, claps, stomps, and hands on laps. Here and there, students have had opportunities to put mallets to xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels, as well as jingle some bells and strum a guitar. Thanks to the spooky mood of this month, we've even had a go at listening to major/minor chord differences. The most accessible instrument of all has also seen some practice, as we warm up our voices with songs for the Christmas performance just around the wintry corner.
Mid-November
The first trimester has happened and grades are going home. Feel free to stop by at parent-teacher conferences if your child isn't passing music or computer science. We're going over song form, dynamics (soft/loud), and other concepts that fit in well with concert protocol. The voices are really starting to come together in our practices for the Christmas show. I'm excited for the different classroom groups that are working together to bring you their best singing at the performance (Thurs Dec. 18th) just before the Christmas break in the not-so-distant future!
Mid-December
See below for details to our Christmas program. All are welcome to attend!
Mid-January
After a long holiday break, we've needed a refresher on the fundamentals. So far, we've revisited rhythm and the musical scale incorporated with dance, rhythm sticks, bucket drums, and boomwhackers. All of the classes have improved in their abilities to cooperate and listen to each other as they strive to work together. Looking forward to creating more harmony amongst the learners in music, library, and computer science.
