At Erie Elementary School we always focus on acceptance, celebrating uniqueness, empathy and inclusion. We create a safe learning environment in which students learn to advocate for their needs. Each child learns to identify their unique learning style and to appreciate that of others. Students recognize that people have different perspectives and may interact and build relationships in unique ways.
Welcome back, Amazing Erie Families!
We’ve learned a lot about our need for human connection over the past year and a half. It is essential to our mental health, our physical health and our personal growth.
Many of us are just beginning to recover from a feeling of isolation.
Many of us are finding that we are faced with relearning how to connect with others. How to create a habit of reaching out, playing with friends, reading social cues. This takes courage. For many of us, the COVID pandemic has zapped our self-confidence and diminished our motivation.
To start the school year, our classroom counseling lessons at all grade levels K-5, will focus on Character. Each student will consider a character trait they will bring to our school community every day to ensure that our school feels safe, inclusive and friendly. We are calling these traits, their SuperPowers! A super power may be kindness or honesty, being inclusive or helpful, to name a few.
For students to be successful learners and humans, they need to be well fed, feel safe, receive respect, feel connected. We want to prevent feelings of isolation and promote inclusion. Lisa Damour, PhD has a great Podcast for parents. Episode 41: How do I help my kid find friends again, sheds some light on this challenge.
The counseling program at Erie Elementary School is designed to support academic learning, social-emotional growth and career readiness.
The program includes classroom counseling lessons at all grade levels K-5, small group opportunities for students who may need more focused practice to learn certain skills, as well as one-on-one counseling support.
Please be on the look out for the counseling needs survey. This gives families opportunity to share any concerns or questions you may have and to explore supports for your child.
I look forward to a collaborative partnership with all my families!
