Principal's Message

It is hard to believe, but we are already a quarter of the way through the school year! It seems like we just returned from summer break, and now the fall season is upon us. Fall is a busy time at Springs Valley Elementary! There are a number of field trips scheduled this month and next. You can see the list of those in the calendar below.

As I walk through the halls each day, I notice how the change in decorations announces the progress of the school year. Fall decorations are going up, and soon those will give way to winter-themed items. I enjoy these changes in seasons. I also love to watch our students change as the year progresses. Kindergarten students who were so shy and uncertain become more confident. They are learning the procedures and adjusting to the structure of a school day. Teachers and students have become acquainted with one another. New rules and procedures are (hopefully!) understood and followed. Everyone is growing daily - academically, socially, and behaviorally. You may have seen our theme of "Reach Higher" on class Facebook posts or in newsletters. This means that we are striving to Reach Higher every day by growing in some way.

The grading period ends on October 5. Report cards will be sent home with students on Friday, October 12.

Mr. Apple

Current and former Springs Valley staff members will participate in the Pumpkin Festival parade on Sunday, October 7. Be on the lookout for some of your former teachers on the school float!

PTSO will sponsor the annual Book Bingo on Tuesday, October 23 in the elementary cafeteria. It will begin at 6:00. Bring your children out for a fun time!

Fundraiser items will be delivered to students at school on October 5. After students deliver the items they sold, money will be due back to school by October 12. Thank you for your support of our school and PTSO!

Curriculum and Instruction

This year we are implementing a new math curriculum called GO Math! at all grade levels. GO Math! provides the rigor and depth needed for students to master the math skills contained in the Indiana academic standards. The concepts in this curriculum are challenging, and represent different ways of thinking about math. However, our teachers and students are up to this challenge. We emphasize a growth mindset here at SVE, using a theme of Reach Higher. To Reach Higher means many things: not settling for the status quo, not being afraid of hard work, having a great attitude, and growing academically and behaviorally being just a few. The new math curriculum is challenging, but that is okay.

You can learn more about GO Math! here.

As you probably know, schools are required to conduct a variety of safety drills each school year. We conduct fire drills monthly in order to practice a safe and efficient exit in the event of a fire or smoke event. In October we will conduct an earthquake drill so that students know how to safely respond in the event of an earthquake. Other drills include severe weather/tornado and man-made disaster drills. All are required by Indiana code. Administration and staff take these drills seriously. We routinely evaluate and hone our safety plans. The safety of our students is our top priority.

Our athletic schedule kicks off this month with girls' basketball. The girls will play Crawford County on October 4 at 6:00 in the PE complex gym. Come out and support the girls!

Our Spell Bowl team is practicing for the November 15 area competition. Team members are Olivia Allen, Dylan Apple, Gracie Breedlove, Josie Dixon, Skylan Emmons, Lydia Gossett, Kyan Green, Addi Moffatt, Ethan Parker, Mavrik Tarrants, Elliott Wininger, Maddox Wolford, and Matthew Woolsey.

Our local PTSO supports students and teachers in a number of ways. They sponsor school parties, field trips, movies, and many other school-related activities. This month's Book Bingo is a PTSO event that student love! We are very appreciative of their efforts to support education at Springs Valley Elementary. PTSO meets monthly at the school. Please consider joining this outstanding organization. For more information, call 936-4820.
