Direct Services Offered
Students’ unmet mental health needs pose barriers to learning and development. Although school counselors do not provide long-term mental health therapy in schools, they provide a school counseling program designed to meet the developmental needs of all students.
Classroom Lessons
The school counseling program offers direct services to all students through classroom instruction and schoolwide programming initiatives.
Small-Group Counseling
Small-group counseling is an effective and positive way of providing direct service to multiple students at a time. Small-group counseling can help reduce social isolation and negative emotions, as well as increase positive peer relations and a sense of belonging.
Short-Term Individual Counseling
School counselors provide short-term counseling and crisis intervention focused on mental health or situational concerns such as grief or difficult transitions.
Indirect Services
Indirect services are provided on behalf of students as a result of the school counselors’ interactions with others including referrals for additional assistance, consultation and collaboration.
