In September, classroom counseling lessons focused on coping skills, emotional regulation, and age-appropriate suicide prevention in recognition of National Suicide Prevention Month. Students learned strategies for managing their feelings, practicing healthy self-care, and supporting one another. Beginning in October, lessons will shift to bullying prevention in honor of National Bullying Prevention Month. Students will explore ways to recognize and respond to bullying, understand the role of bystanders, and practice strategies to promote kindness and respect. These lessons aim to empower students to help create a safe and supportive school community where every child feels valued.
Permission slips for small group counseling are also being sent home with select students. Small group counseling provides a supportive setting where students can practice skills, build connections with peers, and receive extra guidance in areas such as friendship, coping skills, or managing emotions. These groups are designed to complement classroom lessons while giving students more individualized support.
Families also recently received information about a grief support group being offered in collaboration with Fernside Supporting Children & Families Through Grief. This small group opportunity provides students who have experienced the loss of a close family member with a safe space to process their feelings, connect with peers, and learn healthy coping strategies. Interested families are encouraged to return permission forms by Friday, October 17th.
