Welcome to Sunderland Sixth Form! We’re really looking forward to welcoming you as one of our Sixth Form students in September!
Welcome to Sunderland Sixth Form's Get Ahead page - it is brilliant to have you with us already, as next academic year's Year 12 students!
Sunderland Sixth Form offers 25 courses, to 450 students aged 16-19. Our students have the highest achievement rates of any Sixth Form in the North-East, and 99% of our Sixth Form leavers progress to positive destinations; university, apprenticeship or employment.
We hope that you find this page really useful in helping you make the transition from school to Sixth Form - there are a series of important sections on this page, which will help answer any questions that you may have, support you in 'Getting Ahead' in the subjects that you would like to study and to introduce you to the Sixth Form staff.
The main things to point out:
Subject transition tasks and resources can be found under the 'Get Ahead with your Subjects' tab.
If you know people who haven't yet applied to the Sixth Form yet, it isn't too late - let them know!
If you need to contact us, you can email our admissions team (below), or your subject teachers by clicking on the 'Sixth Form Staff' tab.
We can't wait for you to start your new journey with us...we hope you're looking forward to your next steps too!!
Adam Sams
Director of Sunderland Sixth Form
If you have applied to study at Sunderland Sixth Form, you will receive communication from the college admissions team about a 'Welcome to Sunderland Sixth Form' event on Thur 25th June 2025.
This event will give you an opportunity to attend workshops to introduce the 'Get Ahead' subject tasks , to help you get one step ahead for the next academic year!
You need to register to attend this Step Up event, and so to receive email communication about how to do so, you will need to have completed an application form to study with us...
If you haven't yet applied to the Sixth Form yet, see the section on 'How To Apply...' below.
The Sixth Form Get Ahead tasks are designed for helping you in your transition between your GCSE studies and studying at Sixth Form.
If you click on the 'Get Ahead with your Subjects' tab at the top of this page, you will see a range of resources, materials and tasks for each subject that you are interesting in studying with us.
You should read through and complete these tasks in advance of coming in to enrol on your courses in August....this is great in helping you to hit the ground running in the new academic year!
If you have any questions, you can email the subject lecturers by clicking on the 'Sixth Form Staff' tab.
About Us...
Some of you may be asking yourselves, 'What's the difference between Sunderland College?'.......
Sunderland Sixth Form is the A-Level faculty of Sunderland College, based at Bede Campus - the majority of the Sixth Form is based in the building that you can see from Durham Road.
You can expect some positive changes……
- As a 16-18 year old Sixth Form student, you can firmly expect to be treated as a young adult, and we will embrace every student’s individuality!!
- All students refer to staff by their first names…not Sir/Miss – we understand you!
- Although we ask students to dress appropriately, we have no ‘school’ uniform…although we do ask you to dress respectfully.
- There will be times each day when you are not timetabled to be in a lesson; these are your study periods.
Excellent personal and academic support…..
- Your Sixth Form teachers are A-Level EXPERTS; we only teach A-Level…we know exactly what you need!
- You will have a Skills Development Coach & a Progress Development Tutor, with weekly 1:1s available for you
- A specific learning support and student services team, to assist with learning difficulties, disabilities, mental health and finances
- A designated college counselling service, for students
