World Language in the Elementary School

WLES is an acronym for World Language in the Elementary School. The goal of the WLES program is to establish the foundations of and to support Spanish language acquisition. This important foundation will provide a rich background for world language students as they continue their language learning in Middle School and High School.

Our WLES teachers use a multi-modal approach to address both students learning the Spanish language for the first time, as well as our heritage Spanish language students. Through different strategies and techniques teachers explore the 5 C's of language learning: "Communication, Cultures, Comparisons, Connections and Communities."

How can parents support their child?

  • Have your child become the language teacher. Ask them to share all of the wonderful songs, words, phrases and cultural facts they have learned!!!

  • Explore all of what our District and community have to offer. For example, participating in culturally diverse events, visiting the Suffern Free Library and exploring the FLES resources page.
