Why do we teach literacy?
Teaching literacy to students means that they are given the ability to communicate clearly and effectively in order to become lifelong readers and writers. Lifelong practices of readers and writers include the skills that effectively utilize literacy and critical thinking in reading, writing, speaking and listening as they grow into engaged, informed and proactive citizens.
How do we teach literacy?

Suffern Central uses a variety of methods and instructional strategies to meet the need of all our students. Our instructional programs and materials emphasize the five essential components of effective reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
