The Shenandoah University Pharmacy Residency Teaching and Learning Curriculum Program (RTLCP) includes a series of pedagogy lectures with monthly discussions, two lecture opportunities, several small group facilitation sessions, and precepting of a fourth year pharmacy student.
While researching residency programs, one component that I was looking for was a didactic and experiential training program to further develop both my communication and leadership skills. I also wanted the opportunity to precept a student given my passion of supporting others in their growth and development. The RTLCP will provide these opportunities and allow me to deliver on my goals of learning to be a better facilitator, presenter, and leader. I also look forward to having a direct role in growing our future profession through precepting!
Overall, I have gained a better understanding of teaching effectiveness during this longitudinal learning experience through pedagogy seminars, didactic experiences, small group facilitation, and precepting. I actively participated in monthly pedagogy discussions that provided a framework for effective learning, especially in a virtual environment. I applied the knowledge I gained from the seminars to develop and present both a clinical and elective lecture, as well as facilitate a lab activity, journal club, and patient care skills assessment. Lastly, I independently precepted my first student where I was able to provide a holistic learning experience by use of active and collaborative learning activities in a remote setting. While I am not considering academia as a career path, this experience solidified my interests in continuing to find teaching and precepting opportunities in future managed care roles.
