Southeast Regional Middle East and Islamic Studies Society
Welcome to SERMEISS - the Southeast Regional Middle East and Islamic Studies Society - a professional society for specialist or non-specialist educators and other individuals whose professional activities actively engage the Middle East and Islam. The organization was founded in 1977 to provide scholars in the southeastern United States with an opportunity to meet regularly with colleagues to share research findings and teaching concerns. SERMEISS is an affiliated organization of the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA). The SERMEISS 10-state region includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
SERMEISS sponsors an annual fall meeting every October in Valle Crucis, North Carolina near Boone, and a spring meeting at a host university every other year. Programs are designed to provide for interdisciplinary presentations, feedback, and networking among professors, graduate students, and teachers interested in the Middle East and Islam.
HOW TO JOIN
Membership is open to specialist or non-specialist educators, including graduate students, and other individuals whose professional activities actively engage the Middle East and Islam and who live in the southeast region. Dues are $25.00 per calendar year.
Institutional member dues are $200.00 per calendar year for schools with over 5,000 students, and $100 per calendar year for schools with under 5,000 students.

SERMEISS Research Travel Grants and Literature Awards
SERMEISS is pleased to announce the initiation of a research travel grant program and annual literature awards. Click on the link for submission procedures.
The SERMEISS Overseas Travel Grant 2019 provides $500 in financial support for pre-tenured or doctoral student overseas travel to conduct fieldwork, archival research, survey work, etc. on the Middle East or Islam in any academic discipline in the social sciences or humanities from any time period. Closing date for submissions is September 1, 2019.
The SERMEISS Academic Book Prize 2019 recognizes outstanding scholarship in Middle Eastern Studies in any academic discipline in the social sciences or humanities from any time period. Submitted books should be peer-reviewed nonfiction, published in English, and exhibit original empirical and theoretical contributions. Books published within the last three years (2016, 2017, 2018) will be considered. Edited volumes, handbooks, and novels are not eligible for the book award. The award is $200. Submissions closed on June 1, 2019.
The SERMEISS Academic Article or Book Chapter Prize 2019 recognizes outstanding scholarship in Middle Eastern Studies published as a peer-reviewed article or edited volume book chapter from any academic discipline in the social sciences or humanities from any time period. The submission should be peer-reviewed nonfiction, published in English, and exhibit original empirical and theoretical contributions. For the 2019 prize, submissions must have a copyright date within the previous two years (2017 or 2018). The award is $100. Submissions closed on June 1, 2019.
Proposals will be accepted from candidates based at a college or university within the SERMEISS 10-state region. Awardees will commit to attending a SERMEISS conference, and awards include fee waivers for that attendance.
