Welcome to SERMEISS - the Southeast Regional Middle East and Islamic Studies Society - a professional society for specialist or non-specialist educators and other individuals whose professional activities actively engage the Middle East and Islam. The organization was founded in 1977 to provide scholars in the southeastern United States with an opportunity to meet regularly with colleagues to share research findings and teaching concerns. SERMEISS is an affiliated organization of the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA).

The SERMEISS 10-state region includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

HOW TO JOIN

Membership is open to specialist or non-specialist educators, including graduate students, and other individuals whose professional activities actively engage the Middle East and Islam and who live in the southeast region. Dues are $25.00 per calendar year.

Institutional membership dues are $200.00 per calendar year. Includes membership and free conference registration fees for up to 6 individuals from the same institution.

MEETINGS

SERMEISS sponsors an annual fall meeting every October in Valle Crucis, North Carolina near Boone, and a spring meeting at a host university every other year.

Spring meetings and alternate fall meetings feature the Bodman Memorial Lecture.

SERMEISS is Seeking a New Executive Director

The Southeast Regional Middle East and Islamic Studies Society (SERMEISS) is looking for a new Executive Director to help lead the organization. The Executive Director is the Chief Administrative Officer of SERMEISS and is appointed by and serves at the discretion of the Executive Board, consisting of a president and members at large who are elected by Society members. The total time commitment for the position is approximately 10 hours per month, with peak activity in January, February, and October. Those interested in the position are invited to send a letter of inquiry to the SERMEISS Executive Board, care of current Executive Director Cal Allen at edsermeiss@gmail.com, describing their interest in and qualifications for the position. Spring Meeting 2022: Call for Papers

The Southeast Regional Middle East and Islamic Studies Society (SERMEISS) invites scholars (including advanced doctoral students) to submit paper proposals for its Spring 2022 workshop, to be held April 9-10, 2022 at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL. The workshop will focus on “Travel, Mobility, and Cultural Conflict in the Middle East and North Africa” and is being organized by a committee chaired by Dr. Waleed Hazbun (University of Alabama). Papers presented at the 2022 workshop will be considered for publication in a special issue of the Journal of Tourism History. For more information, please visit the Spring Meetings page. We aim to host this event in person, but will consider a virtual option for the meeting if needed; a decision will be made in January.

2022 SERMEISS Book and Article/Book Chapter Prizes and Travel Grant Award Call for Proposals

The 2022 SERMEISS Book Prize will recognize a peer-reviewed nonfiction work of outstanding scholarship published in English that exhibits original empirical and theoretical contributions in Middle Eastern or Islamic studies in any academic discipline in the social sciences or humanities from any time period.

The 2022 SERMEISS Article/Book Chapter Prize will recognize a peer-reviewed nonfiction work of outstanding scholarship published in English that exhibits original empirical and theoretical contributions in Middle Eastern or Islamic studies in any academic discipline in the social sciences or humanities from any time period.

The 2022 SERMEISS Overseas Travel Grant will provide financial support for overseas travel to conduct fieldwork, archival research, survey work, etc. on the Middle East or Islam in any academic discipline in the social sciences or humanities from any time period.

Virtual Research Workshops

In an effort better to serve our academic community across the region, SERMEISS is announcing a new initiative to host Virtual Research Workshops. The goal of these workshops is to help scholars prepare manuscripts for submission to a peer-reviewed journal (or other publication outlet).
